Autumn Term 2022
Homework: Placed live online at Purple Mash on a Friday to be completed by the next Friday.
Reading: Please read at least five minutes daily.
PE: Our PE is a Tuesday and a Friday - please keep kits at home and bring them on appropriate days getting ready for secondary school.
Equipment: Please note from January the children will need to bring their own pencil cases in to school. (This is in readiness for secondary school). They will need a blue handwriting or gel pen. Colouring pencils, a ruler, pencil and rubber at least. Anything extra they want to use is a bonus.
Spellings: This week's spellings are: delicious, precious, conscious, spacious, vicious, suspicious, infectious, cautious, ambitious, scrumptious, superstitious, nutritious.
Week 11
(28-2/11-12/22)
This week we have been looking at how to be authors in English. We have started studying Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman and have looked at using different techniques to make our stories more interesting for readers. We have looked at multiplication and division of fractions in Maths.
In topic we looked at how bias can be seen in secondary sources in History by studying the Wars of the Roses and looking at the representation of Richard III. We also created our own sculptures in Art - studying how we can use negative space when creating a piece.
Week 10
(21-25/11/22)
This week we have continued studying fractions in Maths by looking at addition and subtraction. We have been doing our big write in English and creating our own Essays on what the Maya did for us.
In topic we have been learning about impasto and looking at how to create art pieces in this style.
Week 9
(14-18/11/22)
This week we had assessment week during Maths and English. I've been so impressed with the children's attitudes to taking assessments and their efforts have blown me away.
We learnt about how seasons differ depending on where you are on the Earth during Geography and we began looking at Indonesian Gamelan music.
Week 8
(7-11/11/22)
This week we have started our fractions unit. The children have been simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions by making them the same denominator. We have looked at Cohesion and passives in our writing and the children created some interesting and gripping longer pieces.
In topic we have focused on RE - looking at how Christian's are influenced by the teachings of Jesus as well as studying how good of a monarch King John was and what changes he implemented in the UK.
Week 7
(17-21/10/22)
This week we have been focusing on completing our topic work. We have learnt how to sing in harmony and play a piece of music on the glockenspiels for our music lessons. We have completed our unit on Asia in Geography by focusing on Afghanistan and what makes it a developing country. We have also focused on improving our use of space in Art.
Week 6
(10-14/10/22)
This week we have been continuing to solve division problems. Looking at how we can create decimals for our remainders. We have been completing our big writes based on the arrival and then looking at how we can improve them further during a DIRT activity.
Geography this week has been looking at Russia and it's place in the world both physically and with regards to resources. We have continued our work in RE and PSHE as well - looking at setting ourselves goals.
Week 5
(3-7/10/2022)
This week we have been focusing on using the tables we have been working on for the last two weeks to solve multiplication and division problems. I have been impressed with the effort many of the children have been putting in to this and their hard work is definitely paying off. The children edited their stories this week to improve them further and I have been pleased with the quality of their writing.
We have been looking at China this week for Geography - thinking abot the human and physical features of the country as well as creating our own dance routine to Oliver! songs in PE.
Please note we have PE on Thursday next week instead of Friday.
Week 4
(26-30/9/2022)
This week we have been focusing on rules of divisibility and ways in which we can make multiplication and division easier on ourselves. We have been been looking at cohesion in English and using adverbials and conjunctions before starting to plan and write our own piece inspired by 'The Arrival'.
We have been looking at Goals and Worries in our PSHE lesson and thinking about how this links to our school motto - in what ways do we need to work hard to achieve.
Week 3
(19-23/9/2022)
In maths this week we have been focusing on learning our tables and being ready to progress to multiplication and divison. The children wrote some fabulous non fiction pieces about imaginary familiars based on our book.
We have learnt how to use maps and studied Asia this week. We also accessed First Aid courses!
Week 2
(12-16/9/2022)
This week we have been focusing on our place value again before moving on to addition and subtraction. We have looked at how we can make our writing more interesting in English.
Our History this week focused on the effect William the Conqueror had on the monarchy of England. We also looked at dance in PE.
Week 1
(5-9/9/2022)
It's been a great first week back! The children have shown great enthusiasm and effort this week. I have been impressed with how well they have taken to the new behaviour system and Year 6 expectations.
We have spent this week learning about place value in Maths, descriptive writing in English and reading Oliver Twist for Guided Reading during our core sessions in the morning.
Our afternoon topic has been focused on how the Commandments and Greatest Commandment show how Christians live their lives in RE, Layering different mediums in Art and looking at how 1066 was a year of much change in the monarchy during our History lessons.
We have been sorted in to our new houses and have worked on our own new class name of Bass Maltings.
