Spring Term 2024

Reminders

PE is on Tuesday's and Friday's. 

Homework will be set on Purple Mash on a Friday and is due in the following Friday.

Children will be given spelling sheets, with spelling to practice every night, this needs to be returned on a Friday. 

Children are asked to read at home a minimum of five times a week, please log reads on the Boom Reader App. 

W/C 25th March

A great last week of term in Year 5. This week we completed all of our non-core work for the term. We started off with Science, looking at if we can combat the effects of gravity on something heavy. We experimented with levers and pulleys to try and lift something heavy. 

We also completed our final History lesson on the Vikings. We learnt about Canute the Great and why we remember him. We then completed our end of unit quiz. 

In Art, we completed our final lesson on Art in Industry, looking at how we can layer different icings to create detail. 

In Geography, we completed our final two lessons. The first we looked at pollution, understanding what it is and how if affects our local river. In our second lessons, we looked how humans can make a positive impact on the river Slea. We then completed our end of unit quiz. 

We also completed our final RE lesson, on Islam. We looked at inspirational Muslims and how they impact the faith of other Muslims. We then completed our end of unit quiz. 

We started our next unit of Computing, looking at spreadsheets. We made a spreadsheet to convert units from centimetres to metres and then from metres to centimetres. We then made a spreadsheet to count reoccuring letters in a document. 

Finally, to finish off the term, we completed a PSHE lesson on being Healthy, looking at smoking and vaping. 

W/C 18th March

Another great week in Year 5! We have completed our 'Big Write' - our own versions of 'The Lost Thing'. We then moved onto some Poetry, writing our own Cinquain and Haiku poems.

In Maths, we havs completed our unit on Statistics, by looking at tables, two-way tables and timetables. 

In Science, we did an experiment to see if we can combat the effects of gravity on something that is falling. We created parachutes out of a variety of different materials, to see if we could drop an object without it breaking! 

We had the Police in on Monday, where we took part in a Diversity workshop, looking at stereotypes and prejudice.

We completed some more Music, where we learnt to play a song on the Glockenspiel.

On Friday, we enjoyed learning about the Hindu festival Holi. We then took part in our own Holi festival, which was great fun! 

W/C 11th March

It's been assessment week this week, the children have all worked really hard on their Maths, Reading and Science Assessments. 

We have also been finishing our 'Big Write', our own version of 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan. We have completed our drafts and edits and began to publish them.

In Maths, we have completed our work on Area and Perimeter, by looking at how to find the area of a compound shape and how to estimate area. We then moved onto our unit on Statistics, looking at drawing line graphs. 

We have also completed some more History, looking at what changed in 954. We learnt about Eric Bloodaxe and King Eadred. 

In RE, we learnt about Eid. We looked at the two different Eid's in Islam and how and when they are celebrated. 

In Science, we looked at the force Gravity. We learnt about Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton and their discoveries. 

W/C 4th March

We have had a brilliant week in Year 5! In Maths, we have been working hard on Perimeter, especially when finding the missing lengths. We then moved onto finding the area of rectangles. 

In English, we have been working through our Big Write, our own version of 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan. 

In RE, we looked at Salat and what it us. We learnt about the different objects used in Islamic Prayer and the different times of the day that Muslims pray. 

In Geography, we continued our work on rivers and we looked at how humans use the rivers in our local area. We then looked at how the river Slea used to be used, focusing on Sleaford Navigation. 

In Art, we looked at how we can make paper 3D. We looked at the art of quilling, rolling paper. We learnt some different techniques, such as a tight coil, an open coil, a teardrop and a marquis. We then applied these techniques into our own piece of art. 

 

W/C 26th February

Another great week in Year 5. In Maths, we have worked through all of our work on decimals, fractions and percentages, looking at rounding to one decimal place, before looking at percentages. We then looked at equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. We then moved onto our new unit on Area and Perimeter, starting off with finding the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. 

In English, we have enjoyed our book 'The Lost Thing'. We wrote a letter of advice, using the subjunctive form and wrote instructions for looking after our own lost thing using modal verbs. Then we wrote our own advert, using different sentence forms, before describing our own lost thing using relative clauses. Finally, we wrote a diary entry in the role of either the boy in our story or the lost thing. 

In Geography, we went on a walk to the River Slea. We looked at the different features of the river and followed it to where it splits into the old and new River Slea. We also looked at some Ordanance Survey maps, locating the source of the River Slea and where it joins the River Witham, before heading to the sea. 

In History, we looked at what changed in Viking England after Danelaw, looking at the different monarchs and the relationship between the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. 

In Art, we started our Art in industry unit, where we designed our own contemporary outfits. 

W/C 19th February

What a great start to the term. Year 5 have knuckled down this week and completed some excellent work. 

In English, we completed another lesson on speech, and how to integrate this into our stories, we then completed a DIRT Activity on our Big Write from last term. We were then introduced to our new book, 'The Lost Thing' where we made some predictions on what was happening in a sound clip, before watching the first few minutes of the story. We then read the first few pages of the story and completed some work on synonymns, changing a few sentences in the story. 

In Maths, we have continued our work on Decimals and looked at thousandths, before we started to compare and order decimals. We then looked at rounding decimals to the nearest whole number. 

In RE, we have continued our work on Islam and looked at the washing ritual of Wudu, which Muslims perform before prayer. 

In History, we looked at the rivalry between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, asking the question of why was there tensiosn between the two groups, we looked at Danelaw, which was the land that the Vikings were given by the Anglo-Saxons in return for peace. 

In Science, we started our new topic on forces. We looked at what a force is and looked at forces acting on different objects. We then looked at water resistance and air resistance and how they impact objects. 

W/C 5th February

A great week in Hilltop, for those children who went! Those who remaind at school had a great week with Mrs Minucci! 

W/C 29th January

Last week of school before our residential to Hilltop next week. We have been working through our Maths unit on Decimals. We have looked at numbers greater than 1 with 2 decimal places, before moving onto equivalent fractions for tenths and hundreths. We looked at other equivalent fractions and decimals before looking at thousandths. 

In English, we have completed our own Sci-Fi stories for our Big Write and then spent time proof reading and editing, before publishing them. 

We completed our end of unit assessment in Geography and completed our Science unit, learning about how the movement of the Earth affects us, looking at day and night and the seasons. We also looked into how our views on the Earth and Solar System have changed over time. 

In computing, we completed two of our Onlone Safety lessons, looking at the rules of being SMART online. 

A reminder that next week, some children will be going to Hilltop. Those who are not going, will be in Year 6 for the week, with Mrs Minucci. 

W/C 22nd January

Another busy week in Year 5! We have started to write out 'Big Write' a Sci-Fi Narrative, based on 'Robot Girl'. We will continue this next week!

In Maths, we have continued our work on Fractions, looking at finding the fraction a an amount, finding the whole and using fractions as operators. We then moved onto decimals, looking at numbers less than 1, with two decimal places. 

In RE, we learnt about Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. We learnt about why Hajj is important to Muslims, and the different rituals that they take part in during their time in Mecca.

We looked at what the Vikings believed, in History. We read the Norse Myth about Valhalla and the Valkaries and looked at how their beliefs changed over time. 

In Science, we continued our work on the Solar System and learnt about moons. We lloked at what a moon actually is and why it is important for Earth to have one. 

In Art, we continued our work on sketching, and took our previuos learning of drawing body parts into a portrait. We drew portaits of oursleves and then of one another. 

 

W/C 15th January

We have had a great week in Year 5. The children have worked really hard in all areas of the curriculum. In Maths, we completed our work on Multiplication and Division, by working on our problem solving skills. We then moved onto our second unit of Fractions. We started this off by looking at multiplying a unit fraction by an integer, then a non-unit fractions. Finally, we looked at multiplying a mixed number by an integer, using two different methods. 

In English, we have come to the end of our book 'Robot Girl' the children really enjoyed the twist at the end! We wrote a comparison of two different characters, then a balanced argument, before reviewing the book. 

In RE, we looked at Ramadan and what Muslims do during this special month. In History, we learnt why the Vikings were so successful at raiding. In Geography, we looked at what happens to a river on its journey. In Science, we looked at how the bodies in our Solar System move. 

W/C 8th January

What a busy week we have had in Year 5! We have been taking part in our Bikeability training this week, as a part of our life skills curriculum. On Monday, we all took our bikes onto the playground and developed some basic skills, such as how to get pedal ready, looking over our left and right shoulder and following in a snake! Some of us then took to the roads on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, where we looked at road positioning and awareness and then moving onto signalling and left and right turns. The children worked really hard and listened to the instructors really well. We have all developed our road safety skills and some of us were awarded the Level 1 and 2 awards. 

In addition to Bikeability, we also managed to squeeze in some other lessons! In Maths, we have been dividing a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number and then looked at remainders. In English, we read some more of our book 'Robot Girl' before writing some narrative around some speech and looking at the use of idioms. 

We also completed another RE lesson, on Islam. We looked at Ummah, which is the worldwide community of Muslims and then looked at how Hajj (Pilgrimage) and Zakat (Giving to Charity) links to Ummah. 

In History, we continued our work on the Vikings. We looked at the raid on Lindisfarne in 793AD and how much fear these raids would have caused the people of Britain. 

We also started our Science topic on Space! We learnt about what a Solar System is and what ours is like, learning the names of the planets in order from the sun. 

Finally, on Friday, we completed another Geography lesson looking at how rivers are formed. 

We also started our new PE units, on Monday we enjoyed Dance with Miss Cheryl from Dance Lobo, where we started to learn our Jive routine! On Tuesday, we started our Rugby lessons! 

W/C 3rd January

Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year! Year 5 have started the New Year off well, getting stuck into some new areas of learning! In Maths, we have learnt how to multiply a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number and then looked at problem solving with multiplication. We then moved onto some short division, which we will continue next week. 

In English, our new book has been revealed...'Robot Girl' by Malorie Blackman. We did some work on inference before doing some Drama and creating Freeze Frames!

We started our new topic in History, The Vikings! In our first lesson this week, we looked at who the Vikings were, where they came from, where they settled and why. 

In RE, we started our new topic on Islam. We looked at the key features of a Mosque and the purpose of these features. 

In Geography, we looked at the Water Cycle, understanding that the water on Earth is constantly moving. 

On Friday, we enjoyed our workshop from 'Rock Kidz'. We learnt a new song called 'Don't Quit' which is all about learning from our mistakes and that it is ok to fail! It was a great day, throughly enjoyed by all!
