Summer Term 2023
Week commencing 10th July
This week has been lovely for all children. Some children have been away on their first residential to Kingswood, whilst others have been at school being news reporters and taking part in drama activities.
When we were all reunited on Thursday we became authors again, this time we were publishing our novels into books.
Week commencing 3rd July
This week we have been super busy writing our novels in English, we have been planning, drafting, editing, and improving our work, just like the others we aspire to be.
In maths we have been looking at angles and lines, looking at perpendicular and parallel lines and obtuse and acute angles. We have also worked really hard in our maths assessment this week, Miss Massingham is really proud of us!
This week we have also had sports day and looked at why Ptolemy was such an important ruler during his rule as an Egyptian Pharaoh.
Week commencing 26th June
We are a step closer this week to becoming publishers in English. We have planned and begun to draft our own versions of our class book ‘The day I swapped my sister for 2 ….’
In maths we are extending our knowledge of time, looking at start and end times, months, years, days and weeks.
This week we have also looked at what materials repel and attract magnets (science) the importance of Ramesses II and also completed our reading and science assessments.
Week commencing 19th June
This week in English we have been learning more about where dad has been on his travels and all the things that he has been swapped with. We have made predictions, written diary’s and focused on writing in first person.
In Maths this week we are showing great perseverance and resilience when looking at time. We have been learning how to tell the time to the minute and convert analogue and digital time.
During our afternoons we have been enjoying the sunshine when doing P.E outside, practicing our athletics in preparation for sports day and building up our teamwork in OAA. We have also looked closely at non-contact forces such as gravity, and magnetism in science. Whilst considering where and why Christians go on pilgrimages.
Week commencing 12th June
An amazing, fun filled, jam packed week this week in year 3!
This week in Maths we have moved onto looking at money. We have recapped the different dominations and looked at how we can convert money into pounds and pence and add and subtract different amounts.
In English we are continuing our new book. This week we have deepened our understanding of speech and looked at using the apostrophe for contractions and possessions.
In the afternoons this week we have continued with our touch type unit in ICT and are becoming whizzes when typing. We have also been looking at Ancient Egypt, exploring the timeline of Pharos including how Tutankhamun succeeded Akhenaten.
The highlight of the week this week has been the rock concert on Wednesday. We all had an amazing time being rockstars for the day and we can’t wait for the next rock out!

Week commencing 5th June 2023
Welcome back year 3!
We have been busy this week in maths, continuing to work on our fractions unit. This week we have been looking at subtracting fractions and working out fractions of amounts, using our knowledge of division.
In English this week we have started our new book ‘The day I swapped my dad for 2 goldfish’. We started the unit thinking about if we would swap our parents and what we would swap them for. We then moved on using our knowledge of speech to act out parts of the book in role as different characters.
During the afternoons, we have looked at pilgrimages in R.E, the northern and southern hemispheres in Geography and considered how abstract artists use line to create their artwork.
Week commencing 22nd May
It’s half term. Year 3 have worked hard this term and we have achieved so much!
In the past week we have finished our short stories based on the mysteries of Harris Burdick, have published our own books, become illustrators and completed our DIRT to improve a section of our big write.
In maths we have finished our unit on mass and capacity, developing our fluency and problem-solving skills when measuring and using scales. We have now moved on to our second unit of fractions, looking at how we can add fractions.
We have finished our unit in Geography, looking at different weather patterns within climate zones, have looked at using spreadsheets in computing and have begun to learn how to touch type and in Music we have looked at the symphonies in Sleeping Beauty.
This week we have also been on our class trip to the deep, where we learnt all about the coral reef and the different types of animals that live there. We had a great time looking at the exhibits within the deep, we learnt how to walk penguins, considered how different animals adapt to their habitats and even saw some real-life sharks.
Week commencing 15th May
We are Authors! This week we have begun to write our own mystery story, through the inspiration of our class book ‘The mysteries of Harris Burdick’. We have created our own spooky atmospheres and have left the reader wanting to read the sequel by ending on a cliff hanger.
As mathematicians we are continuing to work hard on units of measure., looking at volume and capacity, converting between litres and millilitres and finding equivalent capacities and volumes.
In the afternoons, we have continued our work in R.E looking at the trimurti and tridevi in Hinduism.
Week commencing 8th May
We have been working hard in Maths this week, continuing our unit on Mass. This week we have been comparing masses, looking at equivalent mass and adding and subtracting mass.
In English this week we have been looking at speech. We have used drama to create conversations between 2 characters in our book to help us when writing and punctuating speech in our writing.
As scientists we have become underwater researchers investigating the Kelp Forest and Mariana Trench. When not being scientists we have been geographers, furthering our knowledge of the globe looking at different climates.
Week commencing 1st May
This week we have been busy, busy, busy!
In Maths we have started our new unit on Mass. We have been using our knowledge of numbers to 100 to work out the scales on a number line. We then used this knowledge to work out the mass of different objects.
We have continued with our English book ‘The mysteries of Harris Burdick’, looking at the present perfect form and how we can change our tenses to suit different styles of writing.
During the afternoons we have been busy, taking part in French, P.E and dance. We even had time to fit in some geography where we looked at the globe and how it is split into hemispheres. We have also started our oceans topic in science looking at underwater habitats.
Week commencing 24th April 2023
We have had another busy week in year 3 this week.
In Maths we are continuing to work hard on our unit of fractions. Looking at how we can add fractions to make a whole, how we can count in fractions and looking at how we spot equivalent fractions using bar models and number lines.
In English we have been continuing to investigate the images of Harris Burdick and have been looking at how we can develop our sentences to create paragraphs and setting descriptions. We have also been looking at how we can vary the way that our sentences begin.
In the afternoons this week we have started our new unit in History, looking at the Ancient Egyptians. We were all really interested in the process of mummification and what they believed happened in the afterlife. We even became news reporters reporting on how the Great Pyramid of Giza was built. Did you know it was the tallest structure in the world until Lincoln Cathedral was built over 4,000 years later.
This week we have also started our new unit in Geography, looking at how the world is split into the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Miss Massingham taught us a really catchy song to help us remember the key wards, longitude, latitude, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere and equator.
Week commencing 17th April 2023
It’s the first week back and Year 3 have been working hard!
This week we have started our new unit in Maths looking at Fractions. We have recapped what a fraction needs (equal parts, a numerator and denominator, and even learnt some catchy new dance moves to help us remember).
In English this week we received a mysterious letter and Photographs about a boy called Harris Burdick. We have become mystery detectives trying to decide what is happening in the pictures and using our knowledge of noun phrases to help us write some descriptive sentences.
In topic this week we have started our new Art unit on the Abstract movement, looking at what makes a piece of Art abstract. We have also been looking at Hinduism in RE, looking at the creation story and how it is similar and different to the Christianity creation story. We have also been enjoying our Pe lessons with Mr Godson and are lucky to be learning a new dance routine with Miss Cheryl from Dance Lobo.
