Autumn Term 2022

W/C 12.12.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Well done Year 2, another fab week completed!

In Maths this week, we have been looking at vertices on 2D shapes. We had to count all the corners on a range of 2D shapes- we really enjoyed these lessons counting lots of regular and irregular polygons.

In English, we have been looking at a range of newspaper articles and talking about how they are written. We then got to have a go at being reporters and reporting on a case where a house has been found being held up by trees!

On Tuesday, we designed and made our own festive bread for our D&T project. We decided to make Christmas tree doughballs with cheese inside! They were delicious! We worked really hard in our groups to measure out the ingredient, knead the dough and then made the bread in the shape of a Christmas tree. We then got to try our bread and evaluate it by saying how we could improve it!

On Wednesday afternoon, we had PE with Mr Godson and Art with Mrs Freeman.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

The end of the final full week of 2022, just a few more days to get through next week – we can do it Year 2! In Maths this week we’ve continued to learn about shape by drawing 2D shapes (trickier than it sounds, using a ruler is HARD!) and by learning about vertical lines of symmetry. We know how to draw polygons and that they have to have straight sides, we can draw different types of triangles, rectangles and even hexagons as well as identify how many edges and vertices they have. We even know that even if a shape should have a line of symmetry if there is a coloured dot on one side and not the other then it is not symmetrical as both sides have to be exactly the same.

We’ve finished off our Big Write, a newspaper article about our current book, ‘House Held up by Trees’. Our English lessons at the latter end of the week have been all about handwriting. We are learning to write using the pre-cursive formation of all letters and we’ve done lots of practising. Once we were sure we could do it we took a sentence from our Big Write to copy out again using the pre-cursive letter formation. They look beautiful, well done everyone.

PE this morning, our last one of the year and we had a fun, active session with Mr Godson. Lots of us got 10/10 in our spelling test this week! 5 big fat merits heading your way. Our next spelling test will be on the first Friday back, the 6th January. These are the words to learn over Christmas:

replies           copies           carries           supplies        flies

tries              cries             babies           spies             lorries

Enjoy your weekend and see you next week!

W/C 05.12.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

A busy week for us in Year 2 this week.

In Maths this week, we have been working really hard to subtract using the column method with exchanges. We have used Base 10 to help us understand the concept of exchanging a ten for ten ones and how it looks using a formal method. We have enjoyed learning this skill, we know we can use this all through school too!

In English, we are continuing to work on our new book 'House held up by trees'. We have been looking for adverbs in our book and then writing our own sentences using adverbs which either go before or after a verb. Then we looked at using conjunctions to join two sentences together and finally we sequenced the events of a tree seed cycle.

On Monday afternoon, we went on a walk around Sleaford looking for human feature landmarks. We walked to St. Deny's church, the war memorial at the market square, right down to Cogglesford Mill and then to the monument at the top end of town. We really enjoyed looking and finding the landmarks on our walk around Sleaford.

We have also completed our History unit on Women's rights. We looked at the impact the suffrage movement has had on women's rights to the present day. We have really enjoyed learning about women's rights and how so many things have changed!

On Wednesday afternoon, we had PE with Mr Godson and Art with Mrs Freeman creating Christmas decorations.

A great start to the week.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

Where has this week gone?! We blinked and it’s disappeared, one full week and a few days left of the term!

In Maths this week we’ve said goodbye to column addition and subtraction and said hello to learning about shape. We’ve started slowly, by identifying 2D and 3D shapes and then counting the sides of the 2D ones. Slow and steady is winning this race!

In English we’ve read a few more pages of our new book, ‘House Held up by Trees’. We’ve written statements and commands about some familiar trees and then written sentences about some wild and wonderful trees from around the world using subordinating and coordinating conjunctions. We are working so hard.

Just a quiz in RE this week to assess our understanding as we finish our learning about Christianity. In Science we completed our last lesson learning about food chains, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores as well as predators and prey. We learned new vocabulary such as consumers and producers and finished the unit with another assessment. Spellings and PE ended the week on a high. We’re definitely ready for the weekend, some early nights very much needed – and that’s just the grown-ups!

Spellings ready for the last test of 2022 on Friday 16th December are:

fly                 try                July              spy               why

cry                dry               reply             shy               sky

Be safe, have fun and we’ll see you next week!

W/C 28.11.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

So close to the end- the final week of November!

This week in Maths, we have been working really hard to add two 2-digit numbers with an exchange. We have tried really hard to make sure our columns are aligned, and we count carefully using our fingers! This method has been so much fun to learn, the best part is that we will be able to use this method all the way through school too!

In English, we have been practising writing in the present tense and correcting Mrs Barratt's silly sentences, which were written in the past and present mixed so it just did not make sense! Then we wrote a persuasive piece of writing persuading people to save endangered species and why we should save them from becoming extinct. Then we presented our persuasions to the class making sure we read clearly and loud for all to hear.

In Music this week, we continued learning our song 'I Wanna Play in a Band' by practising singing in the different pitches accurately. We then had a listen to another famous rock song 'Sweet Child O'Mine' by Guns and Roses. We listened to the instruments playing and what we could hear, also we talked about why they play their instruments so loud!

In Geography, we have looked at key human landmarks in the towns and cities in Lincolnshire. We used Google Maps to find the towns including, Boston, Skegness, Gainsborough etc and what they are known for. We then plotted these landmarks onto a map of Lincolnshire.

A great first half of this week, well done Year 2.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

A very positive end of the week for us, you’ve worked really hard Year 2 – well done. In Maths we’ve taken to column method like ducks to water, finishing the week strong with mastering subtraction. We know that we start from the ones and that the biggest number always goes at the top of our calculation. Though we haven’t crossed ten just yet and started exchanging our base knowledge is great and we’re confident it will be mastered easily! We are fantastic mathematicians.

In English we’ve begun learning about our new book – although we don’t actually even know what it’s called yet! We know it has something to do with plants, we’ve done some bossy writing giving instructions on how to plant a seed using subordinating conjunctions and have made some predictions about what we think our new story might be from a picture on the front cover of a house surrounded by trees.

In Science we were learning about unfamiliar habitats identifying animals that live in each one and writing about some of the plants you might find there too. In our final RE lesson we learned about Christian funerals and then as a very special treat we got to go and have a tour around St Denys church with Father Philip. We were respectful and listened carefully, and we learned a lot about the different areas of a church as well as the features such as the font, chapels, nave and pulpit. Thank you Father Philip for letting us come to visit your beautiful church.

Our spellings for next weeks test on Friday 9th December are:

fossil             pupil             gerbil            evil               basil

pencil            nostril           April             lentil             anvil

See you next week!

W/C 21.11.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

A busy week this week, in Maths we have started to come to the end of our add and subtract unit of work, so we have been using a range of add and subtract calculations to solve missing numbers and word problems. We have really enjoyed having the Base 10 to help solve these calculations particularly when we have to exchange.

In English, we have written our own story based on our book 'The Journey Home'. We have created our own characters that are at risk of becoming endangered and trekking them across the sea to find a new island full of wonders. There are some brilliant stories and Mrs Barratt and Miss Cragg are very impressed.

On Monday afternoon, we were really lucky and got to go in the hall to watch the first England match for the World Cup against Iran, we won 6-2! It was so much fun watching them in the hall with the whole school.

On Tuesday afternoon, we continued with our History unit 'Women's votes' and learnt about what happened to the views of women whilst the men were sent to war. We know that the women became known as capable and more powerful than the men realised! Then we continued with our Music 'Rock', we listened to a song by Deep Purple, we really enjoyed this song! We then used the glockenspiels to improvise the pulse alongside our current song 'I Wanna Play in a Band'. We are really good playing these using the pulse to help us.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had PE with Mr Godson and Art with Mrs Freeman making sculptures.

A great start to the week, well done Year 2.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

Back to normal this week thank goodness and we’ve finished off the week in style. In Maths we learned something completely new – column method, and we introduced ourselves gently with some addition that did not cross ten. That’s Mrs Barratt’s job on Monday! We worked really hard to understand a new concept, working with our partner using Base 10 and whiteboards to ensure we lined up our numbers in their tens and ones columns. Our books are looking……interesting to say the least but we are learning how to present our work using one square per number and ensuring that we use our rulers for drawing lines.

English this week was a lovely lesson on co-ordinating conjunctions and how they create compound sentences, we added missing conjunctions into sentences then wrote our own sentences using a number of different conjunctions. On Friday we then used this knowledge to edit a sentence from our most recent Big Write to improve it with a variety of conjunctions.

We’ve squeezed an RE lesson about Christian marriage in and a Science lesson about identifying familiar habits as well as a PE lesson, spelling tests, plenty of singing practise with Mrs McCordick and a partridge in a pear tree! We hope to see you at the Christmas Fayre in Sleaford on the 27th to delight your ears with the children’s dulcet tones.

Next weeks spellings for the test on Friday 2nd December are:

petal             hospital         equal            pedal            magical

medal           capital           animal          final              local

Have a great weekend!

W/C 14.11.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Another week done! We have been working extremely hard this week, we have completed our first ever assessment week in Year 2. We have completed an arithmetic paper, reasoning paper in Maths, two papers in Reading and a Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar paper. The children in Year 2 have amazed Mrs Barratt and Miss Cragg- we are so proud of what the children have achieved in such a short space of time! Well done Year 2!

The afternoons have been a little more relaxed after such crazy mornings completing assessments. We have completed our next History lesson learning all about Emily Davison and why she was remembered for her input into helping women get the vote- did you know the Epsom Derby 1913 horse race was a significant day for the suffragettes because of what Emily did?

We have also looked at our final PSHE units for this term, gender differences and celebrating differences. We know that it doesn't matter what you like or dislike you can still be friends!

We continued to use maps in Geography to learn about Lincolnshire, we used ordinance survey maps to look at Lincolnshire and find key human features on the map including, cathedrals, RAF bases and industrial sites.

We started our new Music for this term too, we are learning to sing a new song 'I wanna play in a band' this is a rock song for children. We learnt the verses and chorus and talked about the dynamics, tempo and pitch. We then listened to a famous rock song 'We will rock you' by Queen- we loved this song! Next, we got the glockenspiels out and had a go at playing the notes 'D' and 'C' along to our song 'I wanna play in a band'. We are amazing at Music!

A super start to the week Year 2, well done!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

What a week! Tests and assessments coming out of our ears but we made it, phew! On Thursday we finished off the testing time with a little science test, lots of which we haven’t been taught yet but we were amazing at. Well done Year 2, you’ve tried your absolute best which is all we can ask for. We also completed a plan ready to do our next Big Write next week, a story about some different animals escaping to search for a new habitat like the endangered animals in ‘The Journey Home’. On Thursday we finished off our day with a Science lesson on habitats we know about, discussing what animals need and where different animals live. We also had our next RE lesson in the sequence, this week learning about the Christian baptism or christening ceremony.

On Friday we spent the morning catching up on Maths, learning how to find the difference between numbers by counting on and by subtracting. We also brought out the inequality symbols (<>= greater than, less than and equal to) to compare number sentences which used addition and subtraction. We are beginning to notice that we don’t always have to work out the answers before knowing which symbol to use and that calculations with the addition symbol will always have answers which are greater than calculations with the subtraction symbol. A spelling test and a joint PE lesson with Year 6 finished off our Friday to end the week on a lovely high.

Here are the spellings ready for the test on Friday 25th November:

tunnel           travel            squirrel         vowel            towel

camel            jewel             tinsel            hazel             angel

Enjoy your weekend and we’ll see you next week!

W/C 07.11.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Welcome back to start term 2!

We have kick started the term in full force, we are working our socks off!

In Maths this week, it has been super tricky! We have been using our Base 10 skills to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers crossing the 10 barrier. We have been working on our Place Value knowledge to work out how many tens and ones we have and what we need to add and subtract from the number. This has been really hard work, but we are doing so well, keep it up.

In English, we have continued with our book 'The Journey Home'. We had to find the past tense verbs from what we had read so far and use them to write our own sentences about the story using these past tense verbs. We have also been working on our plurals, we looked at how we change animals so that there are more than one- but there are some sneaky ones in there! Such as, dog = dogs, monkey = monkeys, wolf = wolves etc. Next, we looked at writing in the appropriate perspective, we had to imagine we were one of the animals who had left their homes and talk about how we feel and what we hoped to find. There were some lovely ideas.

In History, we have continued learning about Women's Rights. We learnt about Emmeline Pankhurst and who she is. We know now that she is the leader of the suffragettes and that she was a violent protester because she believed no-one was listening to the peaceful protests, so she decided to get involved by burning buildings, damaging properties and throwing bombs!

In Geography, we started our new unit of 'Lincolnshire'. We have looked at what a city is and where they are located across the UK. We used atlases to find all the different cities in the UK and then compared them to Sleaford and decided that these cities are a lot larger because a city is the largest settlement, and that Sleaford is only a town.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

Welcome back! Did anyone else’s half term disappear in the blink of an eye?!

We’ve settled straight back into it with a week that’s been business as usual. In Maths its been a bit of a mixed bag, one lesson that really was quite difficult and another that was back to amazing independent work. We were learning how to subtract across ten but by exchanging a ten for ten ones – simpler than it sounds but a rather tricky concept to get your head around. We all worked so hard and tried our absolute best. Fridays lesson was a little easier, finding the difference by counting on between two numbers, we all breathed a big sigh of relief!

In English we were writing wanted posters for the naughty people who destroy the habitats of the animals from our story, ‘The Journey Home’. We used statements, commands, questions and exclamations to write sentences with a variety of punctuation telling the factory owners, woodcutters and bamboo harvesters to leave the animals alone! Next we were writing wonderfully descriptive sentences using noun phrases, thinking of adjectives to describe a storm that the animals were caught in in their small, brown boat. Some fantastic work produced to be proud of, some of us got merits in our books for being superstars.

In our Science lesson this week we had the opportunity to leave the classroom and go explore the outdoor area looking for microhabitats. We know a microhabitat is a small place where small creatures live, with its own temperature, light and food. We found spiders, beetles, wasps and a couple of very wriggly centipedes on our adventure! After that we turned our attention to our first RE lesson of the half term, continuing to learn about Christianity. We discussed the events of the nativity, symbols of Christmas, learned about the Christingle service and then looked at all of the events of Holy Week which culminate in Easter Sunday.

Topped off with a spelling test and another PE lesson I’m sure you’d agree we’ve packed plenty in this week! Speaking of spellings, here they are for the test on Friday 18th November:

apple            little              bubble          uncle            eagle

table             bottle            middle          cable             ankle

See you next week!

W/C 17.10.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

The last week before half term, well done Year 2 you have made it through the first term of Year 2 and successfully!

In Maths this week, we have been looking at subtracting across a 10, subtracting from a 10 and then subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number across a 10. When we have been subtracting this week, we have used lots of resources to help us including, number lines, hundred squares and base 10. We have worked our socks off to subtract- don't forget to use your fingers to help you too!

In English, we have started our new book 'The journey home'. We have been using adjectives to describe the different animals and their footprints left in our classroom. We then used these adjectives to write a missing poster about one of the animal footprints that we had found no information on, other than it was a bird! After completing our missing posters, Mrs Barratt uploaded these on the internet and the Natural History Museum gave us a call to tell us that they knew who the footprints belonged to- a dodo! They told us that the dodo is an extinct animal though. We then wrote our own questions what we wanted to know about the dodo.

In Music this week, we have been learning the song 'Tiddalick the Frog'. We have worked on a range of musical activities: fast and slow rhythms, call and response, singing in two parts, clapping time with the beat and also clapping with the off beat. We then sang the song, some of us even sang a solo!

We also learnt about some famous singers for Black History Month. We looked at Bob Marley and where his music originated from and how it influenced modern music today. Next, we listened to more modern music from Stormzy, Jorja Smith and Beyonce. We danced to the different songs and explained how it made us feel!

A great start to the final week Year 2, well done!

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

We made it! First half term in Year 2, completed.

In Maths this week we’ve been finding 10 more and ten less as well as adding and subtracting 10’s. We’ve used Base 10, 100 squares and our fingers to help us with adding and taking away and we’re getting rather good at it now.

In English we’ve been finding out lots of facts about the Dodo, reading information and sorting it into our own sub-headings then using statements and exclamations to write some really interesting facts about the extinct bird. We really impressed Mr Clay when he came in to see our learning! We’ve also talked about the animals in our new story, ‘The Journey Home’ and what is happening with their habitats. We know that the thing they have in common is that their homes are being threatened by habitat loss, deforestation and global warming so we wrote sentences with bossy imperative verbs to advise them on what to do next.

We’ve finished our unit on living things in Science and ended the week with our last lesson learning about what we can do to protect the environment and animals that live in the wild. We created some lovely posters about recycling, turning the tap off when you brush your teeth and taking your litter home and putting it in a bin. We also had time to squeeze in a quiz to see how much we have learned in our lessons, well done everyone, you’ve worked SO HARD and you should be very proud of yourselves.

Here are your spellings for the test after half term, on Friday 11th November:

wriggle          wrestle          wreck            wren             wrote

write             wrap             written          wrapped        wrong

Have an amazing two weeks off, be safe, have fun and get some well-earned rest.

W/C 10.10.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Another week down, well done Year 2!

This week in Maths we have been adding by making ten. This has been using our number bond knowledge to 10 to solve problems e.g., 7 + 5 = 7 + 3 + 2 = 12. We have worked really hard to understand this concept as it is really tricky! We have also added 3 one-digit numbers using number bonds to make it easier for us e.g., 6 + 4 + 3 = 10. Next we looked at adding to the next ten, this involved us using our number bonds again but with larger numbers e.g., 8 + ? = 10, 18 + ? = 20, 28 + ? = 30.

In English, we have been writing our 'Big Write', this has been a retell of Goldilocks and the three bears but as Goldilocks herself. We had to pretend it was us who walked into the bears house, ate the porridge, sat on the chairs and fell asleep in baby bears' bed! We have written some fantastic stories in first person as Goldlocks! Great job Year 2.

On Monday and Tuesday this week, we have been using our coding skills on Purple Mash to create algorithms. We are amazing at this and are really good at spotting Mrs Barratts mistakes! We have coded lots of objects and events- keep practising at home on Purple Mash to get better at coding.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

Week 6, done! Slowly but surely we’re getting there Year 2, one more week to go until half term! It’s been a crazy couple of days with the Great Flood of Year 2 happening on Thursday. We’re happy to say that the classroom has dried out and no wellies or boats will be required next week!

On Thursday we were fortunate enough to take part in some road safety awareness training outside school on the nearby streets of Sleaford. We listened carefully and followed instructions, learning how to keep ourselves safe when we are pedestrians on the road. We recognised different forms of traffic, thinking about the slowest and the fastest, the largest and the smallest and talked about how to cross the road safely. We also squeezed in a Science lesson learning about how wild animals survive and grow without humans. We know that they need water, food, air and shelter and made a map of a fox’s habitat showing the resources it need to live.

In English we’ve worked on something we all found tricky in our Big Write – adjectives. We know they are used to describe and that they add more detail to our writing. We worked hard to identify them, add them into sentences and make our own descriptive sentences up. We then edited a sentence from our own work and made it even better by adding adjectives. In Maths we’ve learned how to add across ten using our knowledge of number bonds to help us when we’re adding tens and ones together. To finish off the week we had our celebration assembly, spelling test and a PE lesson using tennis balls and cones to practise our under-arm throwing.

How amazing was the pumpkin patch?! We are so lucky. We can’t wait to see your carved creations! When you’ve carved it, why not send a picture to us? Email it to [email protected]

Our spellings for our next spelling test on Friday 21st October are as follows:

know             knew             knit               gnome          gnaw

knock            knee             kneel            knight           gnat

See you next week!

W/C 03.10.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

5 weeks into Year 2 already, time has flown!

In Maths this week, we have looked at number bonds to 10 and adding and subtracting multiples of 10. We have worked really hard looking at these concepts and have done amazingly.

In English, continuing with our book 'Goldilocks and the three bears'. We have sequenced the narrative using lots of pictures working with our friends. We then used these sequenced pictures to tell the reader what has happened using a range of traditional story openers such as, once upon a time, next, then etc.

In Topics this week, we have started our ICT unit of coding on purple mash. We had to create an algorithm of clear instructions to make aeroplanes take off accurately. We were really good at this, so we were given the challenge to create a collision between two aircraft and it had to include sound!

In History, we learnt about the suffragettes. We know that they are not peaceful like the suffragists! They were violent, they wanted people to know that they were serious about women getting the vote, so they smashed windows, set off bombs and set fire to buildings- this group of women were known to the prison cells!

We also started our Music unit of work; we have been looking at aboriginal indigenous people. We looked groups of people from Australia who make their own instruments using natural resources from around them, here are some of the instruments we looked at and listened to, digeridoo, gum leaf whistle and the bull roarer. We then got to see these instruments in action as a festival. It sounded great!

On Wednesday afternoon, we had art with Mrs Freeman and PE with Mr Godson.

A great first half of the week, well done Year 2.

Thursday and Friday – Miss Cragg

Week 5 done already, can you believe it?! The summer holidays seem like a distant memory but the October half term is in sight, we can do it!

In Maths we’ve found the compliments of 100 which is a posh way of saying number bonds, we know them all and can even link them to making 10 too. Aren’t we clever! We also began to add and subtract 1’s from a number. We can count on and count back, using our fingers to help us and are learning to spot patterns to make things easier, we are beginning to choose the method we find easiest to answer the question whether this be counting on or back, or looking at adding or subtracting the ones then putting the tens on afterwards.

In English we continued with the fairy tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this time writing a letter of apology from Goldilocks explaining what she had done that was so wrong and how she was going to fix things and make it better for the bears. We also had the chance to do some role-play and act out a meeting between them all, thinking about what they might say to each other, we came out with some great ideas and used a variety of punctuation. In our final lesson of the week we were writing contrasting sentences using the conjunction ‘but’ to make a comparison between the Goldilocks book and a new book called Me and You. We compared the books and thought about the similarities and differences between the characters and the setting, the bears and the houses they lived in.

In our Science lesson this week we were learning about how to support wild animals when food is scarce, particularly in the winter time. We designed our own bird feeders so that they would have plenty to eat when it is really cold outside.

Our spellings for next weeks test on Friday 14th October are:

ice                city               lace              circle             rice

race              cell               fancy            space            circus

Enjoy your weekend!

W/C 26.09.22

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

Such a fabulous week this week.

In English this week, we have been looking at and editing our Big Writes that we wrote all about 'Jess and the Beanstalk'. We have been looking at making sure we have all our capital letters and full stops in the right places and if we haven't, then we edit them in with our purple pens.

We have just started our new book 'Goldilocks and the three bears'. We looked at adjectives that we can use to describe Goldilocks. One of our words were, mischievous!

In Maths this week, we have been comparing numbers, identifying greater and less than by looking the tens and ones. We have also ordered numbers from smallest to greatest and vice versa- again, we were so good at this! We have been counting in our 2s, 5s, and 10s this week too. We are superstars in Maths!

In History, we have looked at who Millicent Fawcett is and why she helped changed the way the world is now. She was a suffragist who helped women achieve the vote by 1928. In Geography, we have completed learning about the UK this week finishing looking at similarities and differences between the four UK countries.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had art with Mrs Freeman and PE with Mr Godson.

Thursday and Friday - Miss Cragg

We’re really flying now year 2! A month back at school, done! In Maths this week we’ve tackled some tricky work, learning how to count in 3’s. We’ve been counting on, using a number line and using other resources to help us. More practice would be fantastic if we could continue to learn this times table at home! In our Friday lesson we were reminding ourselves of our number bonds, first to 10 then to 20. We are great at spotting patterns and thinking carefully about the tens and ones in a number. We can write out fact families using both addition and subtraction and are working hard to represent our findings in different ways such as bar models and part whole models.

In English we’ve been reading our new book, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ by Lauren Child, we’re really enjoying it. We’ve been using adjectives to describe Goldilocks and think about her behaviour when she enters the bears’ house without their permission. We wrote sentences explaining why we think she is greedy, unkind, careless, selfish and cheeky using examples from the book. We also drew a wanted poster for her, so the fairy tale police can catch her for her crimes against the poor bears.

In RE this week we’ve reminded ourselves of the Christian creation story, talking about what Christians believe about Adam and Eve and also thinking about the Greatest Commandments which are to love God and to love your neighbour.

Our spellings for next week (test on Friday 7th October) are:

gym              magic           energy          engine          gentle

gem              giant             giraffe           digit              religion

Have a great weekend!

W/C 19.09.22

Tuesday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

A good third week this week.

In Maths, we have been reading number lines up to 100 using our 10s to help us. We were really good at spotting the missing gaps on the number line! Next, we looked at reading a number line to 100 in 10s and 1s e.g., finding where 27 or 86 might be using our 10s knowledge from yesterday and adding in our 1s from today. We worked really hard using number lines as they are super tricky!

In English, we planned our own story 'Jess and the Beanstalk'. We have decided what the giant wants from us when we get up the beanstalk and then what happens at the end of our stories! We have just started our very first big write in English on Wednesday, we started with the introduction and were looking at including capital letters, full stops and some adjectives where we can. They are looking great so far, can't wait to read the finished pieces next week when they are finished.

In Geography, we continued learning about the UK and what human and physical features are in each country. We looked at a range of human features such as, mountains, lakes, rivers etc and  physical features such as, castles, train stations, building etc. We were really good at spotting which one was which feature.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had art with Mrs Freeman creating shades of colour and then PE with Mr Godson.

Thursday - Friday - Miss Cragg

We’ve worked our socks off towards the end of this week, I think the shine has gone and reality has set in – lots of tired faces and some seriously snotty children in Year 2 but we’re soldiering on!

In English we’ve been finishing off our very first Big Write, rewriting the story of ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’ but using the version we’ve been practicing, called ‘Jess and the Beanstalk’. We’ve worked hard to use our handwriting books, sequencing the story and including capital letters, finger spaces, punctuation and even speech marks! We are really pleased with how hard everyone has tried, we’ve definitely achieved greatness in our writing.

In Maths we’ve finished off our work with number lines….oooh that was a bit tricky! We managed to make it across the finishing line making sure we checked the scale of the number line carefully and using tricks like finding the halfway mark to help us plot where numbers should go. In our second lesson on Friday we began comparing objects using tens frames, Base 10 and other amounts and remembering our equality symbols (<>=) as well as mathematical vocabulary such as greater than, less than and equal to.

In Science we continued with our learning about living things, this week looking at how we can help our pets to survive and grow. We have a lot of pets in Year 2! Chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, fish and even a snail! We talked about how we look after them by giving them food and water, shelter and bedding, love and attention, exercise and access to a vet if they are poorly. In RE we carried on with our learning about Christianity, this week learning about the story of the Good Samaritan. We listened to the story carefully, sequencing and thinking about the different acts of kindness demonstrated.

We also had time for a spelling test and a mini first aid session! We learned how to call for help, sang a song about calling 999 in emergency and administered some first aid to Big Ted.

Next spelling test is on Friday 30th and the new spellings are:

charge           orange          strange         sponge          fringe

change          range            hinge            dungeon        pigeon

What a week! Have a great weekend and we’ll see you to do it all over again on Monday.

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

A great week this week from Year 2.

We have been cracking on really hard in Maths this week, we have been building 10s and 1s, using a place value to grid to show our base 10 and partitioning to 100. We are really good at using manipulatives to support our understanding of Maths. We are doing great!

In English, we are continuing our book 'Jim and the Beanstalk'. We have sequenced the story and then retold the story using a range of sentence openers. Then we looked at the past and present tense and changing verbs into the present progressive.

In History this week, we have learnt all about the suffragists and how they helped support the fight for women getting the vote. They were a group of women who were peaceful protestors, they put their point across by writing letters, marching and putting up posters.

In Geography, we continued learning about the United Kingdom and have been using an atlas to label the countries, capital cities and seas of the UK.

A great first half of the week, well done Year 2.

Thursday and Friday - Miss Cragg

In Maths we’ve been practicing partitioning and we’re getting rather good at it. Flexible partitioning is a little trickier but we’re working hard on using our Base 10 to support us, thinking about the part we have and partitioning to find the missing part that makes the whole. On Friday we were practicing writing numbers all the way up to 100 again by partitioning. We know that 24 means 20 (or 2 lots of ten) and 4 ones.

In English this week we’ve changed the story of ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’….it now features a little girl called Jess! She helped out the giant by fetching him a walking stick, hearing aid and a razor so he could look a little smarter. We identified direct speech and added inverted commas and we also wrote thank you letters from the giant to Jess using adjectives to describe the items she got to improve his life.

In Science we continued to learn about living things, this week looking at how animals change over time and thinking about how some animals look completely different when they are babies to how they look when they are fully grown adults, such as butterflies and frogs. We examined some animal lifecycles and compared these to humans, and the changes that happen as we grow up.

Our first RE lesson focussed on Christianity and the Ten Commandments, the rules that God told to Moses at the top of Mount Sinai. We considered these carefully, acted some of them out and thought about which was the most important to us and why.

We also did some spelling activities and have got our first set of spellings ready for a test on Friday 23rd September. The spellings are stapled into reading records but if they are not there for any reason then this weeks spellings are:

edge             dodge           ridge             judge            lodge

badge           bridge           fudge            smudge         wedge

Have a great weekend, don’t forget there is no school on Monday as we are closed for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. We will see you on Tuesday 20th September.

Monday - Wednesday - Mrs Barratt

What a super start to Year 2. The children have come into the new school year brilliantly and showed us how ready they are to take on the challenges in here!

We started the week off learning all the new rules to follow, how to earn merits and how not to be de-merited! We were also put into our new houses by wearing the sorting hat. We have either been put into Rashford (red), Attenborough (green), Malala (yellow) or Sharman (blue). A great first day in Year 2.

We have started our new English book 'Jim and the Beanstalk'. We already know about Jack and the Beanstalk as a traditional tale, but this one about Jim is a sequel. First of all, we predicted what we think might happen in this story linking our ideas to the original story and then we got to listen to most of the story to see if we were close! Then we had a go at using rhyme, we had to use the giant's phrase 'Fee- Fi- Fo- Fum' and create a rhyme, here were a couple of our ideas: Dee- Di- Do- Dum. I want food in my tum! Hee- Hi- Ho- Hum. I love to chew on bubble-gum! Some super ideas today using rhyme!

Starting Maths off this year all about number and place value. We began by looking at numbers to 20, counting forwards and backwards, filling in the missing gaps and spotting where the mistakes were on the number line! We then moved quickly onto counting in 10s to 100. Again, we were amazing at counting in groups of 10s forwards and backwards. We are so ready for a challenge now!

In our Topics this term, we are learning all about Women's Rights in History. We began this unit learning about what the role of a women was back in the early 1900s. We know that women stayed at home, did the chores, had dinner on the table for their husbands and even looked after the children. We then compared the roles of women to now and how that we share the roles at home and that women can go to work and earn their own money- girls can even go to school now! In Geography, we started learning about the United Kingdom, what countries make up the UK and all about the flags. Did you know the Union Jack flag is a combining flag of the four countries from the UK showing unity?

Mr Godson took us for our first PE lesson or the year, we completed a fitness test and did amazingly well.

A great first half of the week.

Thursday and Friday - Miss Cragg

What an end to the week we've had! On Thursday we had a pretty full on day, with learning how to count in 10s and 1s in Maths then doing some more work on our new book, Jim and the Beanstalk, in English. We wrote some great sentences using inference and putting ourselves in the giant's rather large shoes! We thought hard about how he and Jim must be feeling in some pretty unique situations. We also had time for our first Science lesson, all about what creatures need to survive. We got out of the classroom and explored the playground and field, looking for things to classify into the groups of living, once living and never alive. Which category do you think compost falls in?

On Friday we started the day with our second PE lesson of the week, doing some gymnastics. We then moved onto using coordinating conjunctions in our English lesson - big words that actually mean quite little ones, we were demonstrating our use of 'but' and 'or' today. In Maths we continued to learn how to represent 10s and 1s. In the afternoon we had a big assembly where we sat Hogwarts style in our new houses, Sharman, Malala, Attenborough and Rashford. Did you know most of the top merit point scorers in the WHOLE SCHOOL came from Year 2 this week? We're so proud! We then we split off into our house groups to choose our child House Captain and the adult who is going to lead each house.

I'm sure you'll agree, they've really made us proud this week, working hard in lessons and grasping all of the new school rules that have been put into place. We can't wait to see what the next few weeks bring! Have a great weekend and we'll see you on Monday.
