Spring 2
WC 17th March 2025.
This week has been assessment week across the school and we have completed Maths, Reading Comprehension and Science tests.
We have started a new book in English, a non fiction text about Seasons. We have been learning how a non fiction report is written ready to include all the key features when we write our own.
In Maths, we have been using a number line to count up to 50 and we have identified and added missing numbers!
In Geography, we have learnt about the Continents. In RE, we considered objects used within the Muslim Faith including Prayer Mats and Prayer Beads. In Science, we have been planting and are enjoying checking our seeds progress! In Music, we are thinking about Travel and learning songs using a variety of sounds.
Thank you for all your support for Comic Relief - wow - what crazy hair you had!
WC 10th March 2025.
In English, we finished our story and then wrote our own ideas about how we thought Fear looked and behaved. We all agreed we are bigger and better than Fear although we all sometimes feel it.
In Maths, we have continued to work hard to count in tens and ones up to 50 - we have grouped manipulatives into groups of ten and into groups of tens and ones.
We had a busy week with a range of exciting activities: a Sublime Science session where we made slime, an exciting Planetarium visit and our whole School colourful Holi Festival to end the week!
WC 3rd March 2025.
In English, we have enjoyed reading the middle section of our new book. Fear has followed the little girl around. Fear got bigger and bigger at bedtime. We have written lots of super sentences to describe the girls feelings - we have started to use suffixes and conjunctions.
In Maths, we have done a fabulous job working out related facts. We have also had a go at missing number problems. Lots of children preferred to use a number line to find out the missing ‘something’ in the number sentences. We finished the week by counting up to 50! We used number squares to help us and to look for patterns. 😊 Try and count forwards, starting from different numbers, between 30 and 50!
In Geography, we were excited to start learning about the Globe. We studied atlases to look at world maps aswell as a model globe. We had fun starting to make a Globe of our own, acknowledging that 70% of our planet is infact water! In PSHE, we took our learning outside - we thought carefully about different statements and which were healthy and which weren’t. In Science, we have started to think about the features of Spring and enjoyed seeing the sunshine and flowers starting to appear.
WC 24th February 2025.
Welcome back after our Half Term holiday. We have had a busy week!
In English, we completed our story called The Flower. We wrote about the joy our character Brigg felt when new flowers finally bloomed. We then went on to discuss alternative endings to the story and wrote our own ideas! How creative! During the latter part of the week we started our new text - Me and my Fear by Francesca Sanna. We began by exploring clips from the film 'Inside Out' and discussing the five emotions it portrays - including Fear. We then began reading our new book and writing about the tiny, secret friend called Fear who the little girl in the story carries around with her.
In Maths, we have used our number bond knowledge to help us subtract ones. We have competently used number lines to subtract by counting backwards. We have also used the methods of striking and finding the difference then discussed which method we prefer. What a busy week of subtraction!
In PSHE, we continued to think about our dreams and goals by considering how tricky learning new things can sometimes be. We made our own craft flower and shared our ideas on which part we found the hardest to do and what helped us succeed. In Spellings, we are continuing to recap our tricky words and ensure we write them accurately in our sentences. In Science, we had an interesting discussion about what happens to materials over time - including how metal is a material that is mined and that plastic will never fully decompose. We got busy recycling through some junk modelling and we were very enthusiastic about our varied creations - how imaginative you are Year 1! In Art, we were also very creative this week - making our own ' mood boards' using recycled fashion images and learning about the artists of fashion such as Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang. In History, we explored the life of Mary Seacole, placing the key events of her life in chronological order. We finished the week with Gymnastics - learning about balance and the different body parts we can balance on.
WC 3rd February 2025.
In English, we have started a new story - The Flower. We were intrigued by the main character - Brigg - who lived in a small room in a big city.We discovered he loved books; so much so he smuggled one out of the library! We wrote some lovely sentences about him, including verbs to explain how he had spied a book about flowers on a top shelf and then took it home! We have also enjoyed becoming illustrators - we drew some beautiful book covers of a flower using pastels. Beautiful, creative work Year 1! You may spot our lovely fragrant flowers in the classroom as well as our Flower art! We went on to describe how Brigg felt upset that he could not see flowers within the city even when he roamed the streets and even when he scoured the bins! Some great writing and welldone building up your stamina to write more sentences!
In Maths, we have been busy working on addition. We have been adding using our number bonds and worked hard using our tens frames to help us. We have also enjoyed using dice to make doubles!
In Spelling, we are feeling proud of all our hard work and effort to read and write our tricky words. We have been recapping the ones we found the hardest to spell. In RE, we have been learning about the Islamic Creation story and the Night of Power. We also made some lovely Islamic faith crescents and stars to symbolise hope and divine guidance and protection. In Geography, we discussed whether we would prefer to live in the town or countryside and recorded our answers with an explanation. We are becoming experts at Tri Golf in PE and Ms Cheryl got us all back dancing in rythym! We finished our busy week with our special whole school celebratory assembly.
WC 27th January 2025.
In English, we’ve continued to learn about the long journey from the Caribbean islands to England. We discovered the old boarding ticket from the voyage and wrote lots of sentences about how it was found. We also read about a new character in the Story - Grandad - he was also a musician who played the saxophone. We decided he was very cool and funky and used lots of adjectives to describe him. We finished the story and discussed how much Jo Jo had appreciated her experiences with her Gran Gran. We did a super job using speech to say how much Jo Jo had loved it. Today, we had an imaginary travel ticket of our own; we used our own ideas to write about it. Well-done Year 1! Have a watch of Jo Jo's adventures at home: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001crtf/jojo-gran-gran-specials-its-time-to-go-on-a-voyage There may be other episodes you may enjoy too!
In Maths - we have had a busy time comparing and ordering numbers. We have used towers of cubes and number lines to help us order three numbers. We have also revisited how to use an inequality sign. The second half of the week we started learning addition methods within 20 - we have been using counting on. Starting with the greater number and counting on from it. We used our counters and number lines to help our accuracy.
In maths we will be using our number bonds to 10 (and our number bonds to 20) to help us complete efficient additions. Keep rehearsing these. https://youtu.be/7Hr-a5w_phY
In RE, we have started to learn about the Muslim faith - we started by learning about the Quran. In PSHE, we have considered how we can work together to be successful. We shared ideas with a partner and had to agree on how we could make an agreed design.
In Science, we considered the properties of materials - which material would make the best umbrella See if you can find any objects made of waterproof materials at home?
We were very excited to use the school laptops for the first time in our Computing lesson. We all successfully logged on to the Purple Mash programme, created our own avatar and even explored the games area. We talked about why it was important to keep our password private and why it is better to use an avatar rather than a photo of ourselves when using the Internet.
Please keep reading atleast 3 times a week and rehearse your spellings ready for our test on Monday 3rd February.
Happy Weekend!
WC 20th January 2025.
In English we have started a new story from the animated series of Jo Jo and Gran Gran. It is all about Gran Gran's voyage from St Lucia in the Caribbean and how sentimental objects from her childhood are donated to an exhibition in a local gallery. We have been learning and using new skills in our sentences - including how to use speech, questions and synonyms in our writing - to describe Gran Gran's journey. We have made a drawing of a special or sentimental object of our own - ready to display in our own exhibition in our classroom.
In Maths, we have been using number lines this week to continue to support our learning about numbers between 11 and 20. We have considered which numbers are greater, how to find one more or one less. We have filled in missing numbers and estimated on blank number lines where the correct position should be for different numbers.
For History this week we learnt about the significant person; Neil Armstrong. We learnt how he made history back in 1969 by being the first man to walk on the moon. We wrote sentences about him and drew super pictures of him making history! In Geography we have worked hard to consider the different physical and human features in a town or the country side. We have placed our ideas in a venn diagram and discussed the differences betwen the places. In Art, we continued drawing using tracing. We looked at how we can add detail to our traced sketch. In PE, we continued to learn a dance routine - working on our rhythm and timing. We have also continued to learn about game skills through Tri Golf. We recapped the parts of the game and thought about how we hold the putter to hit the ball.
Another busy week Year 1! Well done!
WC 13th January 2025.
In English this week we shared a lovely book called ‘The Proudest Blue’ about two siblings sharing a new experience of wearing a first hijab. The story inspired us to write some super descriptive sentences about the beautiful, blue hijab and how the girl felt wearing it. We shared some lovely feelings vocabulary - proud, admired, respected. It gave everyone an opportunity to consider how it also feels if you hear unkind or confusing comments if you wear something different but most importantly to be proud of who you are. The children also really related to how they support a sibling or a friend with a new experience too - showing great kindness Year 1 - welldone.
In Maths, we have continued to count to twenty. We have had a great week exploring all the teen numbers and understanding twenty. We have used the CBeebies maths ‘Numberblocks’ series to help us.Have a watch:
We accurately recognised and made different numbers with different manipulatives.
We have continued to work hard in phonics and on our tricky spellings and handwriting each day. We had a fun dance lesson with Dance Lobo on Monday afternoon and followed the steps carefully. In Geography, we labelled new images of our Lincolnshire countryside and we are beginning to understand and explain the differences between the human and physical features. For Art, we really enjoyed using tracing skills. In Science, we had lots of fun finding objects made of different materials around our own classroom - fabulous job!
WC 6th January 2025.
Welcome back for our first Spring term! Great to have everyone back.
We started our learning with our new story, 'How to Catch a Star' by Oliver Jeffers. We have written about how the little boy could try to catch a star of his own to play with. We hoped he could play tig or hide and seek with his star. We tried leaping and springing up to grab one but just couldn’t reach! We made our own sparkly star and wrote about how our stars glistened and shone like the moon. As the story moved on, we realised the fallen star was actually a reflection. Everyone was relieved for a joyful ending where we wrote how our little boy finally found his very own star washed up on the sand.
In Maths, we have been looking in more depth at the numbers between 11 and 16. We have split our numbers into tens and ones using different maths equipment. We have matched numerals with number words and accurately counted amounts.
We have already started with this terms spellings and worked hard on how to perfect our handwriting. We are working on our orientation of letters and making sure we start our letter formation in the correct place. In PSHE, we are thinking about dreams and goals this term. For Geography, we have started to think about the differences between town and countryside.
In Science, this term's learning will be all about different materials - we started this week by thinking about the different properties of objects. We played a game trying to identify objects in a bag by our sense of touch - describing what we could feel eg:bumpy bubble wrap, smooth cold spoon and a hard wooden train track.
In PE, we are dancing with Dance Lobo on Mondays and doing games with Mr Godson on Wednesdays. Please have PE kit in School each week.
Finally, thank you for such super involvement for the School Rock Kidz day today! Wow!
