 WC 18th December.

We finished off this term with lots of seasonal activities and Christmas fun!

As well as our Maths work on addition within 10, the children made some festive Christmas cards to take home.

On Tuesday, we celebrated all of this term’s hard work with some biscuit decorating and party games.

On Wednesday, the whole school got to watch a pantomime performance of Sleeping Beauty, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. We then had a visit from Santa, who gave everyone a yummy chocolate present. Finally, we enjoyed carols around the Christmas tree with the whole school and family and friends!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

WC 11th December.

This week, in Maths, we have grappled with finding the missing part using addition and subtraction. We have used part whole models, tens frames, counters and number lines to help us.

In English, we started the week discussing, participating and performing in a ‘rap’ all about the Bear in our story! Great actions and rhythm! We then enjoyed writing about the ending of the story.

We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the audience for the dress rehearsal of the Reception Class Nativity - what a super job they did!

We have had a busy Design and Technology week across the School. In Year 1, we designed and made Christmas wreaths using craft materials. We then discussed and recorded what had gone well in the process and what we would change. We have completed our seasons work in Science, participated in PE games and dance and squeezed in plenty of phonics and our spellings! Well done everyone! Lots of merits have been given for children’s consistent hard work over this term!

WC 4th December.

In Maths, we have been working on our number bonds to 10. We have been using our tens frames to help us. We have got very good at spotting the patterns on the tens frames to help our counting.

In English, we have worked together to discuss how the bear in our story must be feeling because he has lost his hat. We have written some super sentences to describe his feelings. We discovered his hat had actually been taken by a little rabbit! We had lots of fun in role play predicting the conversation between the bear and the rabbit. We recorded this in our books.

In Art, we have been enjoying getting into the Christmas spirit with a 3D card and a decorated letter to Father Christmas! In Geography, we looked at the photos from our local walk and described the area we live through drawings and words. In History, we discussed how lots of our historical celebrations are based on religion. In Science, we looked at how we could scientifically investigate the seasons, for example how we can measure the different temperatures. In PE, we worked in pairs to use our throwing and catching skills.

A huge thank you to everyone for the very generous donations to the local Community Larder Food Bank. As part of our School Community Week we got busy sorting the donations which were collected today ready to be used at Christmas.Thank you.

WC 27th November.

This week has been our Autumn assessment point. We have very sensibly tackled maths, reading comprehension and science questions. You should be very proud of yourself. You’ve worked hard.

In RE, along with Year 2, we had a jolly (and wet!) walk to our local St Denys’ Church where we received a warm welcome from Father Philip and his colleagues. We got to explore the church and learn first hand about its different features and its history. Thank you for such an interesting visit. We thought about how people get a sense of belonging and completed drawing and writing tasks about this. We also made a little stained glass window. In PSHE, we have continued to think about celebrating differences and how we behave with others. Everyone was very thoughtful. In History, we created our own dragon from the legend of Saint George and the Dragon.

The end of the week brought the start of our Winter season and advent. As part of our Science learning, we looked at the changes in Winter. Everyone liked the fact that we coincidentally had frosty weather and icicles! Perfect! We observed images, and especially loved seeing magnified, beautiful snowflakes. We have opened the first door of our class interactive advent calendar. Thank you to Mrs James for providing this for us to enjoy.

WC 20th November

In Maths, we have practised fact families and number bonds. Everyone has done a super job to write addition sentences. Keep rehearsing your number bonds to 10 as they are so helpful with efficient maths calculations. Ask your grown up to challenge you! 😊

In English, we discovered lots of different hats in our classroom! We got to try all the different types on - there were riding hats, knights helmets, fancy hats, warm hats, straw hats, party hats and lots more! We learnt all about how a question needs a reply and got busy asking each other all about their hat! We quizzed Mrs Glaves on her hat. We had a go to write our own questions and answers. Mrs Wardell then introduced our new story… ‘I want my hat back’ by Jon Klassen! A story all about a bear who has lost his hat! We made some predictions about what we thought the bear’s hat may look like. We did some super drawings of our prediction and added words and sentences to describe it. I wonder if we will be correct…

We have continued to work hard and read each day in phonics and everyone worked really hard on their spellings. Well done!

In Geography, we had a super walk into our town. Everyone was very sensible and enthusiastic. We spotted lots of local human features and some physical features. We shall be making our own town map next! We also noticed how the trees and weather had changed as we move towards Winter. We especially enjoyed all the fallen leaves and observing the River Slea. In Science, we developed our ideas on this by thinking about what we do in this season and making our own fallen leaf wreath. In Music, we thought about the consistent tempo as we found different ways to tap the beat. In Art, we developed a variety of creative 3D paper sculptures using different shapes.

What a busy, productive week we’ve had again!

WC 13th November.

In Maths, we have worked hard on addition. We have been using part whole models and counters to help us write number sentences. We have been exploring how we can make different addition number sentences from a set of counters.

In English, we had a busy writing week. We have been writing captions for our sequenced story pictures. We have written dictated sentences and written our own ideas. We have worked hard to use capital letters, finger spaces, spell using our phonics knowledge and end our sentences with a full stop. Well done!

In RE, we are continuing to learn about Christianity and we have been thinking about how Christians can develop a sense of community. We have learnt about the church, ready for our imminent visit to St Deny’s in Sleaford. In History, we have thought about how and why we celebrate the trooping of the colour and designed our own flags for such a special occasion. In PE, we continued the marching theme by marching to music. In Art, we created large scale collaged Christmas decorations! In PSHE, we have started to think about how we are similar and different to our friends.

Thank you for attending parents evening and also for all your support for Children in Need. The children were so excited about wearing Pyjamas to school! Have a restful weekend…maybe the children will just roll straight into bed after their busy day!

WC 6th November.

Welcome back Year 1. What a great return you've had - all recharged and ready for an exciting term ahead 🙂

In Maths, we started our learning by completing some accurate number lines, with an improved digit formation - well done! We shall keep counting forwards and backwards and proving which number is greater or smaller. We have also started some new learning - addition and subtraction! We have been busy exploring parts and wholes and using a part whole model to add the parts together (with the help of counters and pictures).

In English, we started the week creatively making our own constellation pattern. We read and wrote facts about the stars in the sky (using the features of non fiction texts; such as titles, pictures, labels and factual sentences!) We completed reading our story 'Astro Girl' and discovered Astrid's mum was an astronaut! How inspirational!

In RE, we recapped our Christianity learning to date by completing a quiz. We explored how to use sound in music using our own body to make percussion sounds such as clicking, clapping and stamping! In History, we are remembered those that have served and continue to serve the country - we made lovely collaged poppies. In Science, we have thought about the changes we have seen as we move from Autumn to Winter ( changing leaves, chilly temperatures and the day light hours starting to get shorter). Everyone has been adding fallen leaves from deciduous trees to our class display. In Geography, we continued to learn about our own town of Sleaford and we enjoyed plotting the places we know in our town.

  • We will change each childs phonics books twice a week and the home sharing reading book on a Friday - so keep up the great reading year 1!
  • Spellings will be given out on Mondays and tested the following Monday.
  • Please label all clothing your child brings into school - thank you.

We look forward to seeing you at Parents Evening on Wednesday 15th November.

WC 16th October.

It is hard to believe we are are already reaching the end of our first Autumn term! What a busy time everyone has had. Thank you for a great start in Year 1!

In Maths, we have worked hard comparing numbers and started to order three numbers from smallest to greatest and greatest to smallest! This was tricky but our towers of cubes helped and our number tracks.

In English, we are becoming great at retrieving facts from non fiction texts. We have written about the Moon’s surface, landing on the Moon and about the planet Mars. Our fact sheets had super pictures and labels. We thought about the question - would we like to land on the moon? Maybe you can find out more space facts over the holiday or do some star gazing? 😊

In Art, we were seasonal this week with some fabulous pumpkin craft! In PE, we have been aiming our throwing at targets and used defending skills to stop our opponents! We have also been jumping, rolling and balancing to create a simple sequence.
In Science, we tested out how our senses work together by trying our own taste test! Ask your child about if they found sweet, sour or bitter yummy or yucky? Maybe you can test your senses by tasting something made with pumpkin over the holiday?
In History, we are starting to think about Bonfire night and why we celebrate.

Have a lots of fun and rest. We look forward to seeing you back at School on the 6th November.

WC 9th October.

In Maths, we’ve had a busy week starting to compare numbers. We have used the terms fewer, more and same to describe objects and pictures. We have learnt about inequality signs and been experimenting using them with cubes and number tracks to help us. 'Blockzilla' - the creature in the animation Numberblocks helped us to think about this concept - as he really likes 'bigger' numbers!

In English, we have been using imperative (bossy!) verbs to read, say, act and write short command sentences! We liked the command 'Munch rocket cookies' and we were very good at acting this one out! We received a letter from the character in our book asking for our help with an astronaut fact file! We were keen to become experts and help so we have been busy exploring non fiction texts about space. We enjoyed looking at the pictures, labels and facts about the Moon and we have now started a fact file of our own!

We are continuing to work hard in phonics and we are enjoying developing our gross and fine motor skills through daily wiggle and squiggle movement and our interactive handwriting practise.

In Music, we have used pitch and tempo and expression to sing! We have started to learn a song all about ourselves to demonstrate these skills. In PSHE, we enjoyed having our circle time outside this week and talked about how our actions have consequences and what we feel is fair. In Art, we have used shapes to create our own images. We have also explored the texture of different materials - we added our own original mini collage to our sketch books. In Science, we have used our senses to think about taste - we thought about how we use our mouth and tongue by trying some hot chocolate - which suited the change in weather at the end of this week!

Happy weekend Year 1.

WC 2nd October.

We have been excited to move into the month of October. We have observed the autumn changes around us and talked about what we have seen - including lots of conkers and falling leaves.

In Maths, we have been finding one less, we used cubes and number tracks to help us. We have been comparing and matching groups.

In English. We were surprised to find a bag belonging to a little girl called Astrid. This is the character in our new story. We discovered all sorts of clues in her bag which helped us predict that she must love space and space travel! We have used freeze frames to think about what she’s thinking and written lots of statements. We have also been getting ready to create an astronaut guide!

In RE, we have continued to learn Christian stories. In PSHE, we have thought about how it feels to be proud and celebrated the lots of different ways each child should be proud of themselves. In Music. We thought about pitch by using our voices to make different sounds and sing a new song using them. In Science, we have been using our sense of smell and learning how we smell through our nose and it sends information to our brains!

We have also had a fabulous opportunity to learn some important first aid skills and everyone listened carefully and joined in well.

WC 25th September.

In Maths, we have been doing lots of counting! Counting on, counting one more and counting backwards! It has been lots of fun! It has also meant we’ve had lots of opportunities to write our numerals – great job! We enjoyed using the number track and cubes to prove our answers too.

In English, we have had a very busy week! We worked with our friends to sequence pictures from our Cave Baby story. We then used these illustrations to help us to retell the story. Everyone joined in with repeated refrains and vocabulary and we used some actions to help us; such as using the paint brush and pot, Dad wagging his finger and the long, wiggly mammoth trunk! We have been busy all week writing independent words, captions and sentences to go with the story. Fantastic job! However, there was still time to get messy ourselves and everyone finished the week making paint for Cave drawings of our own!

In RE, we thought about the Christian story of Noah. We retold the story together. In PSHE, we discussed the rights and responsibilities of being in our class. Lots of children felt helping their friends and trying lots of times was important when they are learning .In Science, this week we explored how we feel, we experienced different feelings through touching objects and discussed the fact that it is our skin that helps us feel.

Keep reading! We are impressed by how many children are regularly reading their books and recording it on BOOM reader! Thank you. 😊

W/C 18th September.

We are really getting into our stride now. The weeks are whizzing by far too fast!

In Maths, we have proved we can carefully count within 10 and we have now began to write number words aswell as numerals. Lots of these number words are tricky to read and write but the more we rehearse the better we get. We have also enjoyed counting on from different numbers within ten. We have used tens frames and number tracks to help us.

In English, we have been learning about capital letters and full stops. We have been reading sentences from our Cave Baby story and we have been acting out and writing lots of short sentences trying to remember our capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop.

In RE, we have started to learn about Christianity and the parts of the bible. In Geography, we have been sorting pictures of physical and human features from around Sleaford and looking at images of our town from Google earth! In Science, we have been on a listening walk - thinking about how we use our sense of hearing. We have had a busy week of PE, with gymnastics, games and of course our fabulous dancing session with Robin Windsor! Everyone was amazing and a special well done to those children who received dancing certificates!

 W/C 11th September.

In Maths, we have continued to count objects and count objects from a larger group. We worked confidently and accurately using different resources to help us. Well done!

In English, we have been writing words and simple sentences about the different animals in the story. A great start Year 1! Everyone loved talking about and acting out the laughing hyena! Everyone was also interested that he is a predator and we wrote about how he can hunt.

We have started to rehearse our spellings - look out for these in your home reading folder this weekend. Thank you to those of you who are already accessing your child’s home reading login - we look forward to working with you on this. Our school Governor Mrs James will also be reading with our class on Monday and Tuesday afternoons which is excellent!

In Geography, we have started to learn all about the place we live - Sleaford. We started by looking at human features and lots of children confidently recognised the local buildings and features. In PSHE, this week we thought about the environment we learn best in. In Art, we did a great job drawing different types of lines. In Science, we continued to think about our body and learnt the parts of our eye and discussed how we see.

Thank you for another busy and super week!

W/C 5th September.

Welcome to Year 1! Thank you for a great first week! We know some of you had a few nerves starting in a new class but all the teachers are really proud of you as you have all behaved so sensibly and politely. Well done.

We started our new term by sensibly getting back into our school routines.
In Maths, we have been sorting objects using different criteria. In English, we have already started writing again! We have been using movement to help us develop our pencil control. We have been introduced to our new book ‘The Cave Baby’ by Julia Donaldson. We enjoyed spotting all the animals, sharing facts about them and acting out how they move!

In PSHE, we met our new class character 'Jigsaw Jack' and thought about how we can feel special and safe in our class. Everyone was so kind and talked about how we all value our friends.
In Science, we enjoyed learning about the parts of our body. In PE, we are starting to learn how to improve our game skills and in gymnastics we are starting to learn how to perform a combination of movements. In Art, we learnt about the colour wheel and mixing primary colours.
Finally, we met our new Church Lane School chickens! We enjoyed playing outside with the outdoor play equipment and then saying hello to the chickens each day!

Have a lovely weekend. We shall look forward to seeing you all on Monday. Don't forget our short parent meeting at 3.30pm Wednesday 13th September.
