Summer Term 2022

Homework: Homework will be given out on a Monday and expected back by Friday. This includes: 5 reads at home a week and spellings practice, in preparation for spelling test on a Friday. 

Reminder: PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children need to bring their PE kit into school to get changed into.

In English, we have spent some time re-visiting our learning on relative clauses and looking at how they can be used in our writing. 

We have completed our RE unit on Sikhism, looking at what happens at the Gurdwara, including ceremonies, the langar and the key features. We then carried out and end of uniz quiz. In History, we finished our work on the Mayans, answering the question, did the Mayans really predict the end of the world? We then carried out an end of unit quiz. We alo completed our end of unit quiz in Geography. We also spent quite a bit of time this week taking part in our Changing Me unit of PSHE.

On Thursday we went St George's Academy for taster day. The children took part in some lessons, including EPR, Drama and Graphic Design and enjoyed a cooked lunch in the canteen! 

 

 

W/C 4th July

Another busy week, with more assessments! The children completed Maths and Reading Assessments this week and I am really pleased with how well they have all done!

We managed to fit in some more maths, looking at measuring angles with a protractor and using a protractor to draw lines and angles accurately. We then moved onto calculating angles on a straight line and around a point. For some additional work on this, please see the links below:

In English, we did some additional work on the rules of speech and how to apply this into our wriitng. We then completed our DIRT Activity, improving a section of our Big Write. We then completed some work on the different types of parenthesis, dashes, brackets and commas. 

In History, we completed two lessons, one on how the Mayans trade and the other on chocolate. Did you know the Maya used cocao beans as a form of currency?

In Geography, we compared Brazil's exports to the UK's, looking at the reasons why they are so different. 

W/C 27th June

We have had a very busy week this week. It was our first assessment week of the Summer term and the children completed Maths, Reading and Science tests. I was imporessed with some of the socres and the children worked extremely hard on these, well done!

We also had our Sports Day, the childen took part in their house teams completing a round robin of acitivties in the morning, followed by some tradtional races in the afternoon. The children all enjoyed the day and displayed excellent sportsmanship, determination and resilience throughout.  Well done to Oak, who were the overall winners. 

Year 5 also supported Reception and KS1 with thier Sports Day. The children were all responsible for a group of children, who they took round the round robin. They were kind, supportive and were able to develop some key skills. In the afternoon, they supported staff with the running of sports day and continued to support and guide the younger pupils. They conducted themselves in a mature manner and I am very proud of each and every one of them! Well done!

Another great week in Year 5. In maths, we have continued our work on converting units, looking at converting units of time, understanding timetables and having a go at a variety of problem solving questions. In English, we have spent time this week, planning and drafting our own story, based on 'Otto: The autobiography of a teddy bear' Next week, we will edit them and publish our final version. 

In History, we looked at the Maya calendar and why it was an important change. In Geography, we looked at the UK’s biggest exports and why these exports are mainly from secondary industries. Finally, on Friday we completed some Art, looking at how can we layer different icings to create detail.

In English, we have been reading the book 'Otto: An Autobiography of a Teddy Bear.' by Tomi Ungerer. We have been working on using conjunctions, developing synonyms, adverbials phrases and using dashes as parenthesis. We wrote a description of the train sation scene, writing from an onlookers perspective and wrote a newspaper article, bases on events which happened in the book. 

In Geography, we learnt about the major trade routes in the world and how physical geography impacts this. We looked at the natural resources that are found in North America and how these are exported around the world. 

In RE, we continued our learning on Sikhism. We learnt about the langar and how the first one was set up by Guru Nanak. We learnt that the langar is a free kitchen, which is set up to feed everyone regardless of their religion and ethnicity. 

We enjoyed art on Friday, looking at how we can make paper 3D, by using quilling.

We then moved onto our new book. An old bear arrived in our classroom and we looked at different ways of describing him, looking at compound-adjectives. We then used modal verbs to give our opinion of where he might have come from.

In History, we continued our work on the Mayans. We looked at the ball games Pok-a-tok (Pitz), the cultural significance of it and how it compares to other games, both past and present.

In Music, we started our unit on playing the Glockenspeil. We learnt to play a song called 'Definitely' used the notes D, E and F. 

Finally, we completed some art, looking at 'Can you design outfits to show a contemporary style?'. We looked at some different designs and then had a go at designing our own outfits.

What a great last week of term! The children have been working really hard in maths, starting a new unit on measure - perimeter and area. In English, we have spent this week drafting, editting and improving our Big Writes, which was a prequel to 'The Lost Happy Endings'. The children have worked hard to try and include as many different types of language as possible, such as; Similes, metaphors, personification, expanded noun phrases!

In science this week, we used our knowledge of materials to design two different types of coat, we then looked carefully at the properties of the materials that we had chosen to see if they were suitable!

In History, we looked at Mayan writing and what it tells us about their society and culture. 

We finished off the week with end of unit assessments in; Goegraphy, RE and Music and then enjoyed tome completing our Renaissance pieces of art!

This week in Year 5 we have completed our work on decimals, looking at decimal sequences as well as multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. We then undertook our end of unit check. In English, we have finished reading 'The Lost Happy Endings', we looked at how similes, metaphors and personification effect the reader. We then planned our Big Write, which will be a prequel to the story 'The Lost Happy Endings'. 

In RE, we looked at family worship and why it is important to Hindu's. In History, we learnt about Mayan writing, the city emblem glyphs and Stela, which showed information about the achievements of a ruler. In Geography, we looked at why Mexico is a city on contrasts and compared the different landscapes and features. 

In Science, we answered the question 'Can all changes be reversed?' by mixing together ingredients to make a cake. 

To finish off the week, we did some art. We looked at 'How can we critique the art piece using our opinions and those of others whilst considering the skills used within the movement?' We then had a go at recreating our own version of the Mona Lisa.

In English, we have been working on tenses and drawing inferences from the text. We then looked at newspaper reports, writing with a formal language and distinguishing between fact and opinion, as well as using quotations and reported speech. 

In Geography, we looked at some of the physical featires of Mexico, including the River Grande and the Mountain ranges, the Sierra Madre Occidential and the Sierra Madre Oriental. 

In RE, we looked at the different artefacts used in prayer. In Science, we investigated how we can separate materials. We also carried out some art, looking at how form, value and line effect a piece of renaissance art.

Another short week, with the May Bank Holiday, but that didn't stop us from getting lots of learning done this week.

In English, we carried out some additional learning on modal verbs and then completed our DIRT Activity, improving a selction of our Big Write. We then started our new book 'The Lost Happy Endings' by Carol Ann Duffy. We looked at the different imagery used in the first few pages, including similes, metaphors and personification. We then looked at the different ways to make noun phrases, using common nouns, collective nouns and abstract nouns, we then used these to make our own short poems. 

In History, we read the Maya Creation Story and compared this to other creation stories that we already knew. 

In Science, we carried out an experiment to see what happens when we combine materials.

We are back into the swing of things, with a full week in school! 

In Maths, we have finished the first part of our unit on Fractions, decimals and percentages, looking at writing percentages as fractions and decimals, as well as finding equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. In English, we have finished writing our own version of 'The Lost Thing', we then editted our work, published it and self-assessed. We will be carrying out our DIRT Activity on this next week, beofre moving onto our new book. 

We started our new topic in Science, looking at different ways of grouping materials. We spent time testing the properties of a variety of materials, to help us to group them in different ways. 

In Art, we started to look at the Renaissance period of art, looking at different artists and their work, as well as comparing this to previous art forms that we have learnt. 

In Geography, we continued our learning on Mexico, looking closely at Mexico City. We learnt about what life is like there and why it is so populated.

We started our new topic in History, the Maya Civilisation. We looked at when and where they lived and made our own timelines. 

In RE, we continued our learning on Hinduism, looking at what ceremonies take place in the Mandir. 

W/C 20th April

A nice three day week to start of the summer term, which ended with a very exciting event on Friday afternoon!

We picked up where we left off in maths, continuing our work on comparing and ordering decimals. We then moved onto rounding decimals to the nearest whole number and the nearest tenth. In English, we started drafting our Big Write, which is our own version of 'The Lost Thing', we will continue writing this next week!

We started to look at some of our new topics this week. In Geography, we started our work on Mexico, looking at where Mexico is and the countries that surround it. In RE, we started our work on Hinduism, looking at how Hindus worship. Finally, we started our new unit in Music, looking at Big Band Music, when it started and how it developed. 

On Friday, we took part in the festival of water 'Songkran' which is the Thai New Year. We learnt about the festival and then enjoyed a water fight, with the rest of the school on the field!
