Summer Term 2018
W.C 23.07.18
And just like that, it's all over. How quickly has this year gone? Seems like just yesterday we were all meeting for the first time! What a year it has been and how much we have all changed. We have grown in both height and confidence, ability and maturity.
Alex and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in Year 1 for their hard-work and enthusiasm this year, it has been a privilage to be your teachers and to see your smiling faces every day. We will miss you! Have a safe and adventurous summer and please don't forget to visit us when you're big Year 2's in September.
W.C 16.09.18
Wow, can you believe it was our last full week in Year One this week? Time truly does fly when you're having fun! A lovely week it has been too, making the most of our last few days in our classroom before the long summer holidays. In English we have watched another Literacy Shed film called "The Ugly Sharkling". We have learnt about the features of postcards as well as reminding ourselves about adjectives and trying to use these in expanded noun phrases. It's taking some getting there but most of us can identify the noun and add some adjectives to describe it. We've also worked hard on sequencing a story this week and are becoming experts at this now.
In Maths we have continued to learn how to tell the time, to o'clock and half past. We can read clocks, draw the hands in the correct places and can tell if the time is earlier or later. We've also been comparing time and know about seconds, minutes and hours as well as talking about faster and slower. We used the stopwatches to time ourselves doing a variety of activities and did some great estimating.
In our choosing time this week we have harvested our spring onions and carrots, how amazing did they look? Thank you to the grown-ups who took some home, we hope they tasted just as good!
No spellings to practice next week and no homework, please continue to read lots over the holidays and have amazing adventures. Maybe you could do some writing about them in the form of a postcard or a letter?
Dates for your diary:

A much quieter school for most of the week with the big Year 3's and 4's off on their residential trip to Brancaster. In English this week we had a change from the usual format and worked on a video from Literacy Shed, called 'Something Fishy'. It was about a woman in a laundrette who noticed something strange happening in a washing machine...I bet your child will be able to fill in all of the other details! We tried hard to sequence the story, to collect adjectives about the animals in the story and to write sentences with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. On Friday we put all of this work together and wrote about the story, putting it in chronological order with lots of description.
In Maths we have begun our learning about time, putting the days of the week and months of the year into order and talking about morning, afternoon and evening. Next week we will continue with time looking at o'clock, half past, earlier and later.
This week saw the arrival of the judges for the Sleaford in Bloom competition. Sadly we did not get much time with them but they were complimentary and suggested ideas for our garden area. A huge thank you goes to Alex (and her green thumbs!) for making it the amazing and vastly improved space it is now.

A busy week this week, started off with an assembly to introduce Laura, an artist from the Carre Gallery. She helped us learn about pencil sketching, finding the light and noticing details. Laura taught us how to sketch animals that we had found using books from the library and on iPads. We had two sessions with Laura over the course of the week and really enjoyed ourselves being artists.
In English we were learning all about suffixes. We learnt about adding 'ing' to the end of a word, about changing words to make the past tense by adding 'ed' and about making words plural by adding either 's' or 'es'. We also used comparitive adjectives with 'er' and 'est'.
Congratulations to everyone for trying their hardest at Sports Day on Tuesday, all of the grown-ups at school were very impressed with how hard we all tried. Thank you for all of your support and for joining in with the parents races, we're just about recovered from the teacher races ourselves!
We have undertaken an ICT project this week, all about collecting information. We learnt how to open a search engine and search for images. We chose Guinea Pigs and discussed how the pictures shown were not always real and trustworthy. We reminded ourselves about safe internet usage and the reliability of information on the internet.

This week we had the opportunity to visit Year 2 each day to experience what life will be like after the long summer holidays in September. We met our new teachers, Mrs Glaves and Mrs Egan-Shaw and spent time with Sue. We have done lots of learning and began to get used to the routines and expectations of being big Year 2's. I think you will all agree, we are very ready!

Year 2: Move up day:
Wow! What a thoroughly enjoyable week we had with your children!
On Monday and Tuesday the children completed an ‘All about me’ activity with Mrs Glaves and then designed our own football kit. We then had to write a sentence about why we liked our designs.
On Wednesday, when all of the year 2 team were in, we established classroom rules and created our class charter with the help from the minions; created a pirate flag that we felt represented us as individuals and made our wishes for what we wanted to achieve by the end of year 2. These wishes are super special because we had to seal them into a tiny bottle (with a kiss) and add a sprinkling of magic dust. We were unable to take photographs of this activity- if we did, our secrets would have been compromised. We are also under strict instructions that these cannot be opened until the end of the year 2!
On Thursday, we watched and listened to Jason Derulo’s song: Colours.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWKJ285bYW4
We observed and discussed what we thought the song was about. This led to a fantastic discussion on unity, flags and colour. We then looked at the different nationalities in our class and how it didn’t matter where we were from as we are all one. However, we did make sure that we are equally as proud of our nationality and culture. Using this information, we went on to work in pairs to create flags (from the different nationalities of our new class) using a wide range of materials and resources. Mrs Egan-Shaw challenged us to find the flags from an atlas so that we knew the colours and the designs of the flags. The end product was amazing!
On Friday we travelled to Japan. We learnt why the carp was important amongst the culture and how the carp is used in celebrations. From this, we then made our own carp kites by having a go at origami. We were fantastic and focused. It was a tricky task, but it was no match for the future year 2’s! After this, we travelled to Brazil where we had a go at the Samba- we did this to Rio 2 music. It was fun and exhausting- we even managed to get Sue to do a solo!
At the end of everyday we looked and celebrated all our dojo points that we had earned and ended with a class story. It was great. Mrs Egan-Shaw even managed to learn everybody’s name- finally!
We have thoroughly enjoyed having year 1 in year 2- they are more than ready to join us and I know the year 2 team cannot wait!

Another week has whistled by! This week has been World Cup Week so we have been learning about the wonderful countries we picked out of the hat; Iceland, Senegal, Costa Rica and South Korea. We found out that the Vikings invaded Iceland so we learnt about the Viking longships, labelling a diagram and writing non-fiction sentences. We investigated the continent of Africa and coloured a Senegal flag. We watched K-POP videos, learnt about Korean food and made a Korean fan. Next week is transition week so we will be spending time in Year 2 getting to know Sue, Mrs Glaves and Mrs Egan-Shaw whilst Reception step into our shoes on the way to becoming big Year 1 children in September.
In Science this week we have been consolidating our knowledge of weather and the seasons. We can identify the months of the year and match them to the correct season and can give exmples of weather for each. We can also explain how the weather affects our choice of clothing, giving examples of what we might wear in the different seasons. We sorted clothing into seasons and weather, practising our cutting and sticking skills.
In Maths we have continued our learning about place value to 100. This week we have focused on great than and less then, ordering numbers from smallest to greatest and vice versa. We have also had the opportunity for some outdoor learning with giant number tiles looking at one more and one less. After transition week we are going to learn about money.
In PSHE this week we have learnt about the differences between boys and girls as well as the correct names for the male and female parts. We have also had chance for another music lesson learning another chord on the ukuele!
PE has now moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please can any outstanding PE kits be returned to school.

A busy week with the Phonics Screening but all of the children in our class tried their absolute best. Who can ask for more? All of the grown-ups are immeasurably proud of the progress we have made in Phonics this year with their understanding of blending particularly evident. After spending so much time practising, we very gratefully moved on to learning about sharks, a child-led topic picked after our exciting trip to Skegness Aquarium before half term. We have been working more independently as well as ensuring our work has capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
In Maths we have continued to consolidate our understanding of place value to 100. This week we have been reminding ourselves of how to compare numbers using greater than, less than and equal to. We are working on our communication skills to explain our answers clearly, looking at differences between two numbers and comparing the tens and ones. We have also been building numbers using tens and ones frames with counters, dienes and straws.
We had the exciting opportunity to have a music lesson this week, learning how to hold and play the ukulele. We learned about all of its parts, how to strum the strings and the sounds we could make. Then we learned our first chord - C and played our first song, 'Animal Fair'. Next week we'll learn another chord and put them together!

A very warm welcome back, everyone came in on Monday morning looking well rested and raring to go for the final push to the summer holidays. Six more weeks and two days to go!
Next week the children in Year One will undertake the statutory Phonics Screening. Children across the country will be using their knowledge of sounds to decode and blend real words and alien words, and right here at Church Lane we will be doing the same. We are very ready and have been practising our phonics all week in a variety of ways, playing snakes and ladders games, treasure or trash games, doing activity booklets and playing on different online apps and games. A practice sheet was sent home on Thursday for some additional sounding out, please work with your child over the weekend to read these words ready for Monday.
In Maths we have been consolidating our understanding of place value, this time to 100. We have been discussing tens and ones and using this knowledge to partition and build numbers with base ten, straws and Numicon. Next week we will be revisiting greater than, less than and equal to, using the <, > and = symbols.
We have had the opportunity to spend more time on the laptops and iPads this week, playing on a variety of games and apps as well as making more of an effort to consistently go on Maths Whizz. We worked hard and finally won the trophy for Maths Whizz class of the week! A great effort, well done everyone.
Now that the weather is finally starting to improve we can use our outdoor area again. We have a number of new resources which we are enjoying playing with, and had the opportunity to do a little bit of gardening with Alex too this week, picking our radishes and thinning out the carrots and spring onions.
PE has now moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please can any outstanding PE kits be returned to school.

Hooray we made it! Hello half term! What a half term it has been, huge progress made and we're looking more and more Year two ready by the day.
This week we went on a very exciting day out to Skegness Aquarium. The children behaved impeccably, it's wonderful to know how well they represent our school when we're out and about. Beautiful manners were on display and a group of very respectful children moved around the aquarium with our guides. We were all blown away by their knowledge of underwater animals! We had such a great time exploring the exhibits, watching the fish being fed including the sharks and learning about bioluminescence in our special workshop. What a super day!
It has been History week in school and we had the pleasure of learning about Queen Victoria. What a woman! Queen of the largest empire in the world for 64 long years, with 9 children...wow. We have really enjoyed learning about her life, and a selection of our writing along with our portraits of her are on display in the hall after school on Friday. We also had the opportunity to write a recount about our trip. We did this completely independently, so all of the grown ups were very happy with the results.
In Maths we have been learning about position and direction. We know our left from our right and can do quarter, half, three quarter and full turns.
We used the BeeBots to demonstrate this knowledge and understanding and have used positional language well in class time. We've finished off our lunchboxes for Paddy the Pirate this week and have evaluated and decorated them too. Amazing work!
Have a brilliant half term break and we'll see you back, well rested and ready for the final 7 and a half week push to the end of the year, on Monday 4th June.

Edging ever closer to that elusive half term, its just about in sight now! Another week done and one more to go. We've been challenging ourselves in our learning this week, tackling the features of poetry with great gusto. In English we have learnt about alliteration as well as rhyme and onset. We've dealt with the challenge admirably! Most of us can write an alliterative acrostic poem and can identfy rhyming words.
In Maths we've had fantastic pre and post test results for our fractions learning. A huge amount of us got 100% which shows just how hard we've been working to understand a very tricky concept. We can split shapes into two and four equal parts, using the vocabulary of half and quarter. We can also split numbers and objects into halves and quarters by using both shapes and objects as well as and sharing circles. Amazing stuff Year One! Next week we'll be moving on to position and direction, using our bodies and the BeeBots to turn left and right in quarter, half and full turns both clockwise and anti-clockwise.
In Science we have concluded our learning about everyday materials, this week by sorting objects based on their properties. We can identify hard and soft materials, waterproof and absorbant materials as well as transparent and opaque.
In PSHE we've carried on with our relationships theme, this week learning about what makes us special.
We've been building our lunchboxes to help fix Pirate Paddy's problem in D&T - thank you to all of the grown-ups for all of the wonderful boxes you have donated! We have more than enough now. Next week we'll be finishing the building process then decorating them and finally evaluating our finished product.

To say this has only been a four day week it certainly has felt a lot longer! Lots of learning taking place this week though and some huge evidence of progress. We are able to write more quantity and the quality is leaping along too, compared to where we were at the beginning of the year everyone needs to feel very proud of themselves for some amazing learning.
In English this week we've turned our attention to poetry. We are beginning to learn about some of the features of poetry including rhyme and alliteration. Most of us can spot and write our own rhyming words and we are beginning to recognise and use alliteration, writing an acrostic poem about the seaside.
In Maths we've started fractions, looking at half of a shape and half of a quantity of objects. We know that to find half we must split into two equal groups and we're very good at recognising and splitting shapes into half. We will look at halving quantities again next week just to make sure we all understand.
In Science we investigated materials to see if they were waterproof, opaque or transparent. We tested a welly boot, a t-shirt, a cardboard box, a bottle, a window, a rubber glove and a tin. We enjoyed our experiment very much and could discuss the properties of certain materials at length. Thank you for all of the boxes and tubs received for our lunchbox project. We will be constructing the lunchboxes on Tuesday next week.

We've raced to the finish line this week! Some work produced to be very proud of, our writing truly is beginning to look like Year Two's and our behaviour is getting that way too. Its all very exciting!
In English we have continued learning about diaries, this time identifying the features and using them to write a diary as if we were Mr Grinling from 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. We wrote about his morning and put the events into the correct order, and we also wrote about his feelings when those pesky seagulls were stealing his delicious lunch! We've done lots of work on including description in our writing so it was great to see lots of adjectives being used. We've spent lots of time practising our handwriting so our presentation is improving all the time.
In Maths this week we've been continuing our learning about multiplication and division, sharing into equal groups as well as making groups from a given amount. We have also learnt how to double objects and amounts and know that we have to add the same number again. We are still finding division tricky so we'll look at that again next week before moving on to fractions.
In Science we have been looking at everyday materials. In our lesson we began to look at the properties of materials, for example if they are opaque or transparent, soft or hard, rough or smooth. We practised using adjectives in that lesson too! In Design and Technology we designed our lunchboxes, thinking about what materials we could use so that Mike the parrot and the mermaids couldn't steal it and also so that the stormy weather at sea couldn't make the lunch all soggy. We are collecting boxes (cereal, shoe, washing powder etc) and tubs (yoghurt, cups, bottles) for our lessons so if you have any spare please bring them to school, thank you for your support.
We have also taken delivery of some new items for the classroom and our outdoor area. We've all had so much fun breaking it all in and playing with it this week, here are some pictures of us enjoying some of the new things to play with.

A very mixed bag this week in terms of weather, it can't decide if it wants to rain or shine! Please send a raincoat with your child, the changable weather has meant we've been caught out a few times. We've done nothing but shine this week with our learning though, Miss Cragg and Alex are definitely spotting moments of Year Two readiness already which is wonderful news at this point in the year. We've also been trying hard in our phonics, recognising and reading real and alien words in preparation for the Year One Phonics Screening in June.
In English we have been looking at diaries, the features of them and what to include when writing a diary entry. We have read the story of Dougal the Deep Sea Diver and written a diary as if we accompanied him on a dive under the water. We used some wonderful adjectives and similies for description as well as writing in chronological order the events that happened and using the first person. We also made links to the work that we have done around Earth Day, specifically around the reduction of plastic in the oceans.
In Maths we have focussed our attention on multiplication and division, learning how to share into equal groups and beginning to look at building, writing and reading arrays. We can write multiplication number sentences and are getting the hang of division ones, learning our 2's, 5's and 10's is going well too though any extra practise we could all do at home would be great!
In Science we have begun to differentiate between objects and the materials they are made from, sorting objects into groups based on the material they are. In Design and Technology we have continued to look at the problem of Paddy the Pirate and his lunchbox, this week looking at exisiting lunchboxes and discussing which would best suit the job. We looked at lunchboxes made from wood, paper, card, glass, plastic and metal and ranked them into order by which was the strongest, most waterproof and durable.
Next week we will continue to look at diaries, this time from the perspective of Mr Grinling and will start to look at some non-fiction facts about the ocean. in Maths we will continue to explore multiplication and division through using arrays.
Dates for your diary:
Year One class trip - Tuesday 22nd May 2018 to Skegness Aquarium.
Phonics Screening - w/c 11th June 2018.

A very warm welcome back! A busy first week for us here in Year One, we've been introduced to our new topic, 'Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside' and have been learning our new class text, 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch' by Rhonda and David Armitage. We will be following this book closely over the next few weeks, linking it to our Science and D&T lessons.
In Science we have moved on to Everyday Materials. This week we have learnt about some materials, exploring how they feel and looking at some of their properties. We can sort materials and label them and we can draw them too. Over the coming weeks we will be exploring materials in more detail, choosing the best ones to suit a purpose. We've also started Design and Technology lessons, looking at the problem of Paddy the Pirate and how he can get his lunch along the wire from The Golden Mermaid to The Blue Dolphin without it being stolen by Mike the fearless parrot!
In Maths we have begun to learn about multiplication and division. We are doing well sharing into equal groups and can tell the difference between equal and unequal. We are beginning to recognise the times symbol and are practising counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. Next week we will be looking at multiplication as repeated addition.
We've also managed to book our trip for this term, to Skegness Aquarium on Tuesday 22nd May. It will cost £12.50, please return slips and money to the office, thank you.
If you would like your child to wear suncream at school, please send them with a clearly labelled bottle that we can keep here to apply during the day. Please also ensure that cardigans and jumpers have names in them too, when the weather is warmer they get taken off and left in all sorts of places! If they have names in then they are much more likely to be returned to the right place.
