Spring Term 2024

Girls Football v Metheringham

On Tuesday 19th March, the Girls Football team travelled to Metheringham to play in a Friendly match. The girls wewre very excited, as this was their first girls only match!

The game started quite tentatively, with the team obviously nervous. But a free kick for Church Lane, just outside the area, enabled Adela to score early on!

Metheringham played well in the first half and had a number of chances, eventually scoring 2 before half time.

In the second half, Church Lane showed great determination and were clearly not nervous any more! Some great tackling and passing gave them a number of opportunities to score, but it was Metheringham who managed to net 3 more goals.

A great game, played in good spirits, we look forward to playing Metheringham again soon!

Football v Metheringham

On Tuesday 12th March, the Church Lane Football team played in another of their league matches, this time against Metheringham.

Metheringham were a good side, who passed the ball well, and they were the first to score, with an error in defending. Church Lane kept their heads up though and defended well for the next few minutes. Unfortunately Metheringham scored again before half time. 0 v 2.

The second half saw Church Lane grow in confidence, they passed te ball much better and had a couple of shots on target. Some excellent saves from the Metheringham goalkeeper ensured they kept hold of the lead. Despite Church Lane playing some much better football, Metheringham were able to score again. A penalty gave Church Lane the opportunity to close the gap, but Adela's strong strike was saved by the keeper. With only a few minutes left to play Metheringham were again sucessful and scored one last goal, to make the final score 0 v 4. Well done to all who played, we were really impressed with how the team conducted themselves and continued to push despite the scoreline.

Netball v Kirkby La Thorpe

On Tuesday 5th March, the Church Lane Netball team headed over to Kirkby La Thorpe to play another Netball league match. The team had already played two fixtures this academic year, b ut have not won a match yet! They were hoping that the new kit would bring them some good luck.

The game started well for Church Lane, who dominated the play, they were able to score 3 goals and prevented Kirkby from scoring any! 0 v 3.

The second quarter was not quite as strong, but still the Church Lane team gritted their teeth and played some great Netball.  Their determination paid off and they were able to score one more, half time 0 v 4.

In the third quarter, Kirkby started to creep back into the game and had plenty of scoring opportunities. Kirkby were sucessful in socring twice, whereas Church Lane could only manage one more. This took the score to 2 v 5 with one quarter left to play!

In the final quarter, Church Lane knew they had to play the best Netball of the game to keep this narrow lead. They all played amazingly well, excellent passing, intercepting and defending enabled them to finish the last quarter with two more goals, taking the final score to 2 v 7.

Well done to all who played.

Football v Brant Broughton

Thursday 18th January, saw Church Lane host Brant Broughton in what turned out to be a very close game.

Church started brightly passing the ball round with a purpose and putting some great attacks together, but it was Brant Broughton that took the lead through a break away, which led to a strong shot that snuck in front post.

Brant Broughton grew into the game and started putting the pressure on Church Lane, who looked dangerous on the break, but the pressure from Brant Broughton was enough for another goal, this time getting down the wing pulling across back into the striker, who was waiting at the back post.

Second half was all about Church Lane, Joseph leading a charge of attacks for Church Lane with wave after wave but Brant Broughton were standing strong. Church Lane had found the passing again which was finding gaps around the Brant Broughton team, Ollie-Roy took a free kick just outside the box that was hit with power and purpose but just sailed over.

Church Lane did not let heads drop and were able to pull one back as Wiktor found himself in the box and poking one home.

Going into the last five minutes, it really did open up and it was end to end game of football exciting for all. Church Lane had one final chance as the ball was chased down by Adela and put the defence under pressure, blocks coming in from all defenders but the ball would not make its way into the goal.

It was a great game with two teams looking at attacking with great movement.

Well done both teams.
