Spring Term 2018

This term we are learning:

Term 3

W/C 19th March 2018

A great week this week, we have completed our English unit for this term. We learnt about what 'Hyperbole' was and loved being able to exaggerate everything in class. Also we looked at and analysed a poem looking for a range of skills that we had learnt over the last two weeks. Finally we drafted, edited and wrote our own poem up in neat. The poems are fab!

In Maths, Year 6 have been learning about shapes, recapping 2D shapes and their properties and then moved onto 3D shapes. We have looked at the different properties of 3D shapes, made shapes of nets and drawn nets of different 3D shapes.

In the afternoons, we have read and inferred a range of texts. We have been working on different styles question, for example: finding evidence in the text and word meaning questions.

W/C 12th March 2018

This week in English we have started to look at a new unit of work. This unit is a poetry piece called 'Little Freak'. We have been looking at a range of figurative language: similes, metaphors, personification, adverbs of degree, pathetic fallacy and symbolism. Year 6 have really taken this in their stride and impressed me with their ideas around the clip. In Maths, we have been looking at the different types of questions found in a SATs paper and looked at ways to answer them correctly. In Science this week, the Science Dome came for a visit. We learnt about Natural Selection and Charles Darwin's theory to the evolution of life- this was a great experience.

W/C 5th March 2018

This week the children have been finishing their balanced arguments, Science verses Creationism, there have been some amazing pieces of writing and all the Year 6 staff have been extremely impressed. In Maths, we have continued to learn about angles, the children have completed some tricky questions linked to the topic and have even drawn shapes accuratley using a protractor. In Science and Topic, the class are continuing their work on Evolution, where we are currently focussing on adaptation.

19th February 2018

This week the children have been looking in depth at Evolution. We have been reading a range of articles from National Geographic about What evidence there is for Evolution, How Peter Grant saw natural selection take place in real time and how humans have evolved. As part of this we have made links with Charles Darwins findings and have started to look at the lineage of humans starting as Austrolopithecus and moving through to the Homosapiens. Ask the children about this. Further to this we have started preparing for a discussion piece which the children are about to write which is 'Who or what created Earth and everything on it?' as part of this the children will be comparing and contrasting the ideas of Christianity and Evolutionists.

Week commencing 22nd January 2018

Wow!! What a week we have had. Soooooo much learning has taken place and I think the class would agree we've had a great week. We have now completed our Peter Pan narratives where young Toodles goes missing and is saved from the wicked Captain Hook, we have completed our unit on Area, Perimeter and Volume where the children have completed some pretty tricky problems and finally we have been learning about Evolution. The children have taken a really big interest in Charles Darwin and can now recite a huge array of facts about him. Finally we have started our new PSHE scheme 'Jigsaw' where we have been focussing on the British and school value of 'respect'.

The children have learnt about the rules of speech, creating descriptions of characters and settings and building tension ready to form their own narrative. In Maths the children have been looking at some basic algebra and have linked this to the area and perimeter of shapes. This week we have focused on rectangles, triangles and parallelograms. In science the children have continued their topic on evolution and been learning about characteristics that are carried from either your mother or father.

In French, the children have been building their knowledge ready for their trip to Paris. The children have learnt how to have a converstaion with a shop keeper, geeting them formally, asking how much? And saying goodbye.
